Here's a poll for everyone. Which one of these two calibers would you choose for a do-all rifle. There's no particular usage. No explanations necessary (but welcomed). Take your pick.

*I'm not buying one. I've already made my choice. (30-06) This is just to find out which one comes out on top. Me and a buddy are ragging on each other's gun caliber choice all in fun. :)

I own both. But went with the 06. There isn't nothing the .308 can do that the 06 wont do just a tad bit better. I have heard some folks argue the .308 is more accurate, and I say hogwash.

I'm going with .30-06. I own both, shoot both and like the .30-06 a little better. The .308 is a great cartridge and I like it. However, an 06 will carry a heavier bullet, and will throw the 150-180 grainers faster than the .308 without much more noticeable recoil. Although, I sure wouldn't turn down a new Ruger Precision Rifle in .308.......

Only voted for the 06 cause I used to own a Remington 700 Classic in tha caliber and hand loaded for years, best round was a 168gr, I've forgot the manufacturer.

we own both and both have a long history of delivering excellent performance .... one advantage of the 308 is it chambers smoothly in a BLR ... given the limitation of only having one, we would go with the 30-06 for the same reasons already given

I have both; 1ea 30-06, 3ea 308.

The debate on this topic is probably second only to the .45acp vs. 9mm or revolver vs. pistol debates.

With the military using .308 (7.62) I see it as the round that's getting the most interest and development. The 30-06 has a BIG watershed of existing development in existence.

Bottom line for me: I like the shorter action of the .308 guns. If you want the longer range (aledged) of the 30-06 there are better calibers for that kind of work.

I have both and prefer the 30/06. I have never found any real advantage to the short action argument and basically the same cost to reload so why not have the little extra the 06 has.

I own both. My favorite rifle is chambered in 308 (M1A) but I'm still picking the 30-06. It's a bit more versatile than the 308 especially on the heavier end of the spectrum. Besides, other than the 30-30 nothing is more iconic for an American sportsman than a bolt action 30-06.

Depends on what you want to do...............If ultimate accuracy is the question, the 308 is better

I disagree. I have a vintage 1949 Model 70 .30-06 that will do 5 shot groups that you can cover with a quarter at 100 yards with factory ammo. More than good for hunting.
