I personally love to shoot 45acp and 45 colt I'm purchasing a Ruger revolver (Bisley or Redhawk) as a hunting sidearm and as fishing pistol for a future trip to Alaska (as a ho! #[email protected]$%$# pistol) what are some loads that people use. I'm just starting to hand load 45's. I have never done any hand loads before, my brother is teaching me. I'm not planning on loading any Ruger only, but just trying to find out what is a good all around round load for the lower 48 something for black bear, Hog, a cougar etc. who thinks I look like McNugget

I personally like 8.5gns of unique with a 250-280gn. lead bullet in .45 colt brass. The 45auto is good for plinking or self defense, but for critters, I want 45 colt.

For standard power .45 Colt loads it is hard to beat Unique. 8 to 9 grains with a 260 grain Keith style bullet is what I would choose. Stepping up a level I use 2400, but this would be Ruger only Loading.

Unique 8.8 gr for my Interarms Virginian Dragoon 45 Colt, it's strong enough to take Ruger only loads. But for my Italian clones it's Trail Boss 5.6gr.

how hot are these loads, I'm looking for a good all round 45 colt load. Something I would shoot at the range or grabbing if I have a intruder. Because in 30 plus years I've only had to use my sidearm while hunting twice once on a large hog who was abusing my dogs and on a really mean deer who just refused to get in my freezer.

Range loads at 750 to 800fps - 250gn lead bullet are good. Those .45 dia make nice holes in targets and any 2 legged intruders, no need for the 21 BHN hardcast. Softer cowboy bullets form to the barrel grooves and can reduce leading.
