I thought I'd go to the range today and try out a few loads from John Linebaugh's article.
I was looking for something with a little more power than Unique. I loaded up some of his recipes using 260 cast and A2400, 19 grains through 20.5 grains & 260 cast using HS-6, 13 grains through 15 grains.
I must be getting old, I shot 5 of the 2400 load with 19 grains and shot no more 2400, it was a little warm for my liking at 19! Knocked my sandbag over on every shot and wasn't grouping well. I was standing my sandbag on end as a rest for the butt of the gun.
I moved on to HS-6 and started at 13 grains. I've read that many people have had good groupings with 13 & 13.5, that's why I started at 13 in the first place. HS-6 was a little more to my liking, but plenty. I shot 5-13's, 5-13.5's & 5-14 grains. I was only shooting at 15 yards and 13.5 grouped better than 13 & 14 grouped better than 13.5, with 3 of the 5 making a nice clover leaf!!
I think 14 grains of HS-6 will be "my" heavy load. It seems to have manageable recoil and with the Bisley frame, rolls in the hand nicely while gripping it low. No chrony numbers yet, today I was just shooting for groups. I was shooting 8.3 grains of Unique before, if my memory's right, it was averaging 1,160 fps. I think I'll back that off a little so I'll have a nice 1,000 fps (or so) round to play with. I think I'll pull the other 2400 loads apart and load some more HS-6. :)

I get around 1100fps with 13.0g HS-6 under 255g SWC in a 5 1/2" BH. I wasn't to enamored with the accuracy either, but it isn't that bad. Now 20g of 4227 with a Magnum primer under same bullet shot much better (in my test gun). It's around a 1000fps load in same gun.

I suspect that your memory isn’t right - 8.5 grains of Unique is usually closer to 850 fps. Getting 1160 fps with Unique is really getting up there with pressure.....

I tried some of Mr. Linebaugh's loads utilizing W296 and a 260~ish grain cast bullet in my plow-handle 4-5/8" Blackhawk. They are quite authoritative, and the recoil is what you'd call rather snappy! I have no doubt that this load would kill anything I shot with it DRT! I don't use them for every day shooting, but they will certainly do the job if needed.

AZNimrod, you're right on the load! After looking through my notes, that's my 45/70 velocity using Unique, and I cant find my notes on the .45 Colt, but I'm sure you're right on the money.

Looking at my notes 8.5g Unique under 250g RNFP out of 5 1/2" barrel was 970fps.
