I ask this primarily as it might apply to the #1 model but it might also apply to
other models, so here goes: chronologically is there a distinct point at which
Ruger switched colors on its recoil pads? I have seen some confusing specimens
that seem to indicate that Ruger went back and forth on that over time though
I could well be grossly in error, thanks. Any informed information would be
highly appreciated. I forgot to add that the colors I refer to are red and black
and I hope that is the limit, I sure haven't seen anything else in the spectrum.

At one time Ruger used a rounded off type red pad......in the time between 1972 to 1974 they changed it to a squared off type of red pad and in 1993 Ruger went from red to black.

Thank you Mark, I just knew someone would have that information on the tip of
their tongue or fingertips depending. This helps me date a #1 I recently acquired
and makes clear the timing and sequence of the style and color changes Ruger
did.

you can also get the date info from the Ruger website. There is a field to enter the serial number. If it can't determine the answer, then you get the link to the old style serial number first shipped by year.
