I keep hearing there is an ammo shortage because of the war in Iraq. I bought 1,500 357 JHP bullets the other day that had a $30 sur-charge on them 'cuz of lead and copper being scarce. Well if the Chinese would not use so much lead in their paint for childrens toys there might not be a shortage.

Really, I don't remember any shortage during Vietman, I reloaded a lot after I got out. I think we were shooting a lot more during that war than we are in the current war. Is it like the gas companies, any excuse to raise prices???

Copper plumbing parts that used to be 65 cents are now $3.39---and even the plumbing supply says China is buying up all the copper and brass they can get....the shortage is real...and they're preparing for something more significant than a turkey shoot....

I ordered ammo for the dept yesterday. Got the last case of .223 fmj as they had no sp or bal-tip.
They did not know when they would be having more as they said the .223 is extremely tight at the moment.

As new overseas markets open up, many things that we have taken for granted are going to go up in price. China and india are gearing up to be the new industrial giants of this century with huge growth. I'm afraid America is going the opposite direction and becoming a post-industrial society where we have more consumers than producers. Capitalism at its best and worse.

Kinda scary to think that the locals might be short on ammo if chaos breaks out---rather think of their armory stacked high and deep...maybe we oughta not count on too much sharing from them...;)

If we would stop building their factories to make our stuff they might not have a reason for all those metals. Think they're building up their military? [}:)]

You would think if we, the lowly masses, can see that China is up to something, that our feerless leaders might just be able to figure it out, but I am not holding my breath.

Tim, there's absolutely nothing they CAN do...except pray...when that stone rolls, it'll crush everything in its way until it tries the Rock!!! They can throw away more men daily than we lost in the last war...and never miss them...

There was an article in the local paper about how some PD's in Idaho and Eastern Washington were having problems getting ammo for their AR-series rifles. The article mentioned that .223 Remington is in short supply but they didn't differentiate between the .223 and the 5.56x45 NATO round. But the same article mentioned that the departments were having problems finding .40 S&W at the same time.

Isn't military 5.56x45 NATO made primarily by US military ammunitions plants? Or is there a lot of contract ammo being produced by private corporations??

Cost of ammo is but I thought that was due more to the price of metals rather than a lack of supply. The local gun show last month had large supplies of .223, 7.62x39, 7.62x51, and lots of pistol ammo in the common calibers like 9mm and .45ACP.
