the old model pins are a solid piece, with different slots at the front end, slight variations over the years , and the New Model pins have a "springy thingy" ( small plunger) in the rear to activate ( push against) the transfer bar, keeps it out of the way and to "clear" the rear of the firing pin....thats why they always say to make sure the pin is fully seated, in place, on the New models so they ( you) can properly "cock" the hammer back....
You can use a NM base pin in an OM BH or SBH. Same goes for Single-Sixes. Original equipment OM base pins won't work in a NM as explained by rugerguy. The "springy thingy" in a OM base pin with the transfer bar conversion is the same as a NM base pin "spring thingy". The exception is a 357 Maximum because the frame and cylinder are longer.
