Hi everyone,

I'm a longtime Ruger fan who started out on a Ruger Single-Six and progressed to Blackhawks and Redhawks. I've always thought Rugers were built to last and offered a great bang for the buck. That's why I just picked up a Ruger SP101 in .22lr to teach my wife and little girl (6 yrs old) how to shoot.

As you can see in my topic line, I'm currently stuck in California. Had lots of fun finding a gun that is on the California "approved" list. Couple of other guns I want that aren't on the list, but that's okay. I plan to move back to Texas in a year or two.

Anyone have customization tips for the SP101? I've ordered a set of Hogue wood grips for it and I'm planning on installing one of the gold bead front sights from Gemini Customs. Any other tips? I'm still waiting for mine to arrive because I had to order it from out of state. How does the trigger feel on these out of the box?

Welcome from Alabama.

My experience has been that the trigger on the SP101 is not that great out of the box. With a little work and possibly a set of wolf springs they get a lot better. Ask Iowegan for a copy of his book for the GP100/Sp101, it will explain it much better than I can.

Welcome from Texas. Last sp101 i shot had a great trigger and shot to point of aim. Wouldn't change a thing on that one. Maybe you'll get one like that---luck of the draw it seems.

Welcome from WA. Good choice in revolvers. The sp101 is a great gun. I love my 3" barrelled .357. The trigger pull leaves a little to be desired, but it is a great, strong, little gun. I have noticed that the trigger has gotten quite a bit smoother over the years. I have had mine for 11 years and it has digested many thousands of rounds. The only modification I made was a set of Hogue grips that provide better control for me when firing magnum loads. Have fun with your gun.

Wow, this is a friendly forum! Thanks everyone for the advice. How do I get in touch with Iowegan about his book on the SP101? I'd be very interested.

Welcome to the forum from Louisiana. For your copy of Iowegan's Book on GP100 you can email gbunker(at)huntel.net. It also works for the SP models. Let us know how it turns out. And pictures too!
