To paraphrase Kenny Rogers, you got to know when to holster it and know when to draw it, and obviously this woman did not understand that a concealed carry license does not make you part of law enforcement. I don't think shoplifting, at least in this instance, exactly qualifies as lethal threat.

From the article, this happened in Auburn Hills, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit not in Louisiana. Not sure why this was picked up so prominently by the Times-Picayune in New Orleans other than an anti-gunner reporter who wanted a reason to look down her nose at concealed carriers.

Does Michigan require training for their CCW? If so, this woman clearly wasn't paying attention, since every state law is very clear that it's NOT legal to shoot at someone which isn't posing an immediate, proximate and credible threat to your life.

Having a gun doesn't make you stupid. But as proven here it doesn't raise your IQ either.

Well, there's the slippery slope about letting everyone own a gun. Some people don't have enough smarts or common sense to own a airsoft. She should loose her gun and her permit.

Chances are good depending on Michigan CC law, (of which I am unfamiliar) that she may face charges. Not the least of which could be revocation of her License.
People really need to study and understand self defense statutes.

You cannot use deadly forcd to defend your stuff let alone someone else's
Certainly not in THIS case, but Women being robbed have every reason in the world to believe that once a perp has their means of defense taken (their purse) that the crook will NOT stop with just the purse. Car jacking with robbery could apply too.

Sure it's not written in law anywhere but I doubt a grand jury would indict a woman that used this fear as a logical self defense argument.

here in Mo. the CCW class I took, briefly covered gun safety, qualifying at the range with .22 pistols and revolvers, the real high point of the class was a 2 hour video presentation put together by a local lawyer(and shooter), that detailed how to carry and not end up in jail or on trial. if you carry do you know a defense lawyer, got him on speed dial?

here in "Gun Nation" we, the CCW permit holders, have to be good/expert at this. ongoing training and classes should be available from government and gun organizations. we have the right to a gun, we need to treat it like a privilege and be pro's.

A gun makes a poor substitute for a brain, but it can be a tremendous accessory to one.

And it's never OK to shoot at someone who is fleeing after shoplifting, unless they are shooting at you. This woman may be facing charges - she's VERY lucky she only hit a vehicle and not a person.

You cannot use deadly force unless your life is threatened either by bodily harm or death. A shoplifter running away to their getaway car is NOT a life threatening situation. Even worse is if the guy had his own CCW, he would have been justified to shoot back because HIS life WAS put in danger. Laws work funny like that don't they?
