That is one of my wife's pet peeves with many of the modern mothers and fathers. It seems to be much more convenient for the parents to stick in a video and go do something else rather than read or talk to a kid(s). Our grandkids watch very little TV here. They look at books with my wife reading or explaining or do little craft projects with cardboard, paper plates and other things around the house and no whining is permitted.

Was helping the 5yr old grandaughter learn to read last night - we are heavily into "Red Bear - Blue Bear". Sort of a modern "See Jill Run Up the Hill".

God bless you guys for seeing things this way. It is such a blessing to see family members involved in their young ones lives. It also makes teaching my kids in school much easier when I know there is someone at home who cares.
