I carry what might be appropriate, plus some extra emergency rounds.
I took 4 rounds when I was in middle school and high school, and then had an opportunity to fill 4 tags in a morning - I had 3 deer in my truck and spotted a fourth on another of my properties, I stalked out and took a shot. The doe crumpled, kicked, and stalled for a moment, but suddenly found her feet and RAN. My rifle was empty, my truck was 300yrds away and didn’t have any spare rounds. The only salvation I had at hand was my 7.5” Super Blackhawk. At which point I felt as though I were about to reenact the Keith legend of flinging 44mag pills 600yrds at a fleeing deer. Luckily for me, my legs were fresh, she was hobbled, and I found an opportunity as she stumbled through a ravine to put a ~125yrd shot on her with a 240grn Semi-jacketed Winchester. She didn’t make it out of the wash. Dumb luck in a dumb situation. 20+ years later, if I have a tag in my pocket, I have at least 5 rounds in my possession to fill it.
About 10yrs ago, after not having doneso for about 5yrs, I went coyote calling with an old college buddy south of PHX and Tucson. In prep, on the phone, he insisted I bring one of my AR’s instead of a bolt gun, and he told me to bring my chest rig (3 gun gear). I assumed he was joking. He asserted - “no really, bring at least 200rnds.” Since we had hunted that area many times, I didn’t immediately realize why - the area we were hunting had become a relatively high risk, but very high consequence area for running across armed smugglers while in the desert. A few hunters had gone missing in the few years I had not been down with him, and abandoned vehicles were found frequently in the area. Not wanting to become one of these legends myself, I have worn my chest rig in this area ever since.
