I decided to use a vacation day on Friday. Since where I am going is public land, I have a better chance going before the weekend, of not being too crowded... Here's a topo of where I am going...

I took the photos last year on the last day of hunting season. I thought I saw a black bear about 80 yards away, obscurred by tree leaves... After I scoped it, it disappeared... no noise. This area has deer, bobcat, black bear and "fur-bearers". I'm going for deer, but will take bear or bobcat, depending on size. I'm stoked!

I'll be carrying slung M77R MarkII .270 X 4 with 16 in my pack, packing cross-draw Blackhawk .38 Special +P SJHP X 6 with 44 in my pack, and concealed strong side P95DPR 9mm Winchester Silver-Tip JHP X 30... I should come back alive...:D

Since you are back-packing into this area, how are you going to get your deer out? I've packed them out by myself before, but never 12 miles!

This is a different place... In the map by the "P" in "Devil's Gap" is where I'll park my truck... I'll only be hiking in about 150 yards at this place... But most of that is climbing...

But in answer to your question, I'd pack it out in several trips, 1/5 at a time... with the "cape" being first...

That's the way I did it. Thank God for the meat pole and cheese cloth. Kept the varmints off the quarters while I was packing it out. Camp robber jays just love venison!

I understand that sentiment-I love dogs, too-always glad to see you and never turn on you-better than most people...just figured with his magicollar if you got lost you could call for help-or have coffee-or a hot steak-that's some collar! Bet you don't see this till you come home tired and bloody with a freezerful of venison!! Good hunting!

Well... No deer... but I did call in a herd of turkey, about 15 to 20 of 'em![8D]

All is not lost, though. I've been invited to go tomorrow on some private land close to home... but I've got to use shotgun with slugs or a pistol with a 4" or longer barrel... Wait a minute... I've got one now! My trusty NM Blackhawk... but I think I will go with the Remington 870 Express Magnum and slugs... Easier kill and besides, I'm not used to the Single Action pistol yet... Maybe next year.

Good luck tomorrow! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
