Permethrin, treat your field clothing with it.
Rodents are the primary reservoir of most ticks. You can treat a bag of cotton balls with Permethrin (DIYPest control.Com) - the same stuff you would use on your clothes, and stuff a bunch of these into small tin cans (soup cans or soda/beer cans) with the top cut out. Tuck these cans around the yard (1 can every 50 to 75 feet around the perimeter of your yard or 1 can for every 2000 square feet of area) under wood piles, behind sheds, anywhere they will be out of sight and the mice will find them. They use the material for their nests and while this will not eradicate ticks, it will keep the population very low. I think you can also buy very overpriced tubes from Thermacell with this same control method.

Anyone have an idea on what to use after a tick is on you?
I picked up a gadget called TickKey at a local pet store. Our cats pick up ticks on a regular basis. Seems to work well on them, would probably work well on humans.
