A man has built a powerful home-made weapon using nothing more than a computer and a 3D printer in his back shed.
The futuristic looking rail gun looks like it belongs in a Star Wars scene, but it was created by a DIY enthusiast known only as NSA_listbot on the image posting website Imgur.
Video of the gun shows it firing metal rods at more than 900km/h, roughly the cruising speed of an Airbus A380.
The creator said it was designed using widely available parts and a 3D printer.
Instead of gun powder the weapon uses electromagnetic pulses to fire projectiles at high speeds.
Videos of the gun in action have gone viral, with more than 300,000 views since it was posted on YouTube on Saturday.
The weapon is filmed firing metal rods at a target in the man's shed.
"The aluminium went about 3/8" into a ½" steel backed plywood sheet," he said.
Rail gun technology has recently been unveiled as a weapon in use by the US Navy.
A rail gun developed by the Navy is capable of firing projectiles at mach 7, or seven times the speed of sound.

That's 560 mph or 820 fps here in the other colony. ;)

You're welcome.

I would hate to have to lug that thing around! Not exactly a good combat weapon or woods gun. Perhaps Apple can figure a way to miniaturize it....
