Two questions:

1. How does the front sight come off?
2. Can someone with a good understanding of hand tools and a little mechanical inclination replace the rear sight?

I understand there is a spring and a few other parts under the rear sight. I am afraid I will get my factory sight off and not be able to get the new sight in place with all the parts underneath it in the correct place.

Krankypants, The front sight is mounted in a dove tail. All you have to do is drift the sight out with a sight pusher tool. You can use a hammer and punch but likely you will mar the finish.

The rear sight is a bit tricky. It is also in a dovetail but it has a screw to hold it in place. Loosen the screw and use a sight pusher to drift the sight out. Again, you can use a hammer and punch but you're bound to ding the finish. Yes, there are two spring loaded plungers that will launch if you are not careful.
