i;m looking into putting an extended mag release on my old standard auto
and not seeing a lot of info anywhere. nothing on U-tube.
do we shy away from this or is it so simple nobody mentions it ?
been all over the web & it;s just about a non issue.
any advise.

finding the part is not a problem.
installing is in the only thing in question.
this is a standard auto .22 pistol.
i'm still searching the web.

Installing a heel magazine release is a fairly simple process. The trickiest part is getting the magazine catch spring back in the frame in the proper orientation. Here's a cut-away view for you to see how the magazine latch is installed.

Remove both grip panels and both pins in the bottom of the grip frame. Take out the old latch. Install the spring, with the metal loop side closest to the magwell and replace upper pin. Place the back of the new latch onto the metal loop and push it into the frame, it should be under tension from the spring loop, and insert the lower pin. Check to ensure the catch rotates properly and locks in a magazine.

I had visions of flying springs & pins, don't look so bad now.
thanks to all that responded. It seemed to be a good setup until I tried a
markll with an extended release, then I knew what I had been missing.

It is about a five minute job. Pushing the new release onto the spring loop and putting in the pin when the holes are lined up is the trickiest part of the whole process. That little loop spring has some tension to it. If your magazines don't stay latched then you'll want to check the orientation of the spring, many folks put them in backwards and this provides less tension on the release latch. The metal loop must be on the magwell side when it is pinned into the frame, this provides maximum spring tension for the latch.

well, I ordered up the extended mag release and a few other dittys from
Brownells , Weigand and Midwest , scope mount, taps, extra mags.
I may have opened up a can of worms here but it will be a lot of fun.
The release may be a three handed job, but it looks like a good
challenge.

mag latch update

Well the extended mag latch is on [ needed to run a 7/64 bit through it]
after about 2 dozen failed attempts I checked pin with latch out of the
frame and sure nuff had a booger in there.
Bullseye that drawing was just what I needed thanks a bunch.
The drilling & taping went well and I mounted an older BSA reddot on top.
10 round mags are on the way & it's new life for the old standard.

Glad to hear it worked out fine for you. Sometimes a little flash from the casting production process ends up in the wrong places. It's good that you quickly solved that problem and were able to finish the installation successfully. I know you'll enjoy using that extended mag latch; In my opinion they should all have had that modification for ease of use.
