...But sometimes the season isn’t so easy when the loved ones you shared those memories with have passed away.

Enter the Memory Farm in Elk Grove. Earl Sassman and his late wife Judy lost their daughter Rhonda 23 years ago to cancer, but hung up Christmas lights that year anyway in an attempt to lift their spirits. It worked, a little, and the tradition grew. Today, there are enough lights for the display to be seen from I-5. Their elaborately decorated home in the farming community of Point Pleasant began to draw visitors each year. It was Judy Sassman’s idea to give visitors a way to share their own memories.

Each guest is offered a hand-cut bell, painted red and white. With a marker, they add a name or a message and hang them up with thousands of others. Bells from past years go on wooden display trees, while new bells are hung on a pair of real trees. Today there are thousands of bells with messages in dozens of languages. Visitors are welcome to come by the farm, add their own bell and search for names from years past.
