Mini-14 broken firing pin?

18795 Views 30 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  sandog
Good day. Went shooting my favorite rifle this morning and after 103 rounds of factory ammo it stopped firing. No dimple on primer and upon disassembly I see that the firing pin tip is jagged and won't go through the bolt face when pushed forward. I couldn't find any pieces of the tip. Anyone know of this happening before? I just e-mailed Ruger asking them for advice.
Thanks for any information!

Too bad there's no stainless steel option to keep it all the same.
Wow, I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it with my own eyes. It is aftermarket, which could be a good thing, seeing all of trouble Ruger has had with some firing pins. I will have to grab one for my Mini. Thanks...
I went to the Ruger website and used the "letter to the CEO" or whatever it is and indicated that we should be able to return the rifle to Ruger to have a spare bolt assy. built . I also said that I would be willing to pay for the shipping and part cost. There is no good reason to be in this situation. Many of use some berdan primer ammo and it should not be a problem. I am also curious as to why the Mini 30 is more prone to the problem.

Follow up:

I received a phone reply/voice mail from this "letter to the CEO" and the rep said that they would fit a replacement bolt assy with firing pin if I returned the rifle. IDK if they want the old bolt included, so I will check before I send it. The cost would be $120.83 return shipping included. Seems like a fair deal to me.

I guess I have to ship it on my own $$, but I would use the LGS where I bought it. The message left a phone # 603-865-2442. I will probably do this in the very near future
It took 9 total days to get the gun back which I thought was fast. They replaced the bolt assembly which by-the-way was defective from the factory. On the side of the bolt there was a "hole" where I could see the firing pin move and I thought was a lubrication hole or something and the replacement one doesn't have that. They also replaced the recoil spring assembly, and repaired the slide and safety which I never knew I had a problem. Shot 230 rounds yesterday and it was all good.
I know the feeling about sending in the mini in just for a bolt replacement I talk to them a couple weeks before my pin broke about the rear sights kept coming lose they told me also I would have to send the the rifle in for that then received another email with a number on it I called it and he told they would send me a new rear sight with out sending in the rifle I was talking to a couple of people the other week and they were saying be prepared for them to keep it a while he knows a guy that gad to threaten to call the ceo to get has pistol back
This thread is 3 years old! Don't expect the OP to answer.
I live within walking distance of Numrich arms. I went over to get a firing pin for my Mini 14 Ranch, They showed me one then told me they no longer have "counter sales" and told me to order it on-line. The absurdity of having my hand on one, than it being flown to FedEX Atlanta and back then trucked to my door totaling twice the price of the item was disturbing. Sad, I purchased my first M-1 (IBM) Carbine, an Enfield 303, an 8MM Mauser and a Glock 23 there late last Century in their walk in used gun store.

ASI will sell you a FP if you don't want to send your Mini back to Ruger, but ASI is overpriced.
And fit will have to be checked, Mini FP's are not one size fits all. Fitting is not hard though, you just have to know the procedure.

There is an aftermarket pin that fits both the Mini-14 and Mini-30 which is as good or better than the factory one. The firingpins.com one is made of heat treated stainless. It comes oversized as far as length, the pin of choice for Mini-30 shooters who want a pin that will reliably set off steel case ammo with deep seated Berdan primers.
The Mini-14 doesn't seem to be as finicky when it comes to steel case ammo.

OK, the next try would be to ship the entire rifle back and request a spare bolt assy. There must be some way to acquire a spare firing pin. the firing pin is probably the most likely thing to break, so I would sure like to have a spare.

Update: I just called Ruger and they say "no way" to any method of acquiring a spare firing pin. Still, there must be saome way.
You can also get a new firing pin to reliably shoot steel at firingpins.com. Waiting to get my new Mini 30 and see how it runs the steel. Still I purchased plenty of brass just to have as well. I heard not to mess with any of the springs and the only thing that recommended to change out is the firing pin with a slightly longer protrusion. Changing out the springs will just wear all of your parts much quicker. The casing is harder, but it also sits a little deeper in from what I've read. Sometimes requiring a longer protrusion.

Seems like someone had just mentioned the firingpuns.com pin. Hmmmm.
