I would think infections would have played a big part with-out having any medication to fight it off. Even a small wound could be deadly back then.

My Great Great Grandpap died from a wood sliver he got in his thumb while clearing the farm fields. Back then, ( mid 1800's) they didnt know what blood poisoning even was .
