Popped my Cherry on a GP100

Finally purchased a revolver. Initially was aiming to procure something in 44 magnum, but the only Rugers locally in stock were the Alaskan model; they look ugly as sin IMO and I don't intend to mount any optics on one. Was also considering grabbing the all stainless SR1911 in 10mm, so this was my "compromise."

Will probably hit the range this weekend after giving it a good clean. Grabbed some 125 gr Remington UMC SJHP 357 that was on sale. Had no idea SJHP was a thing. Remington advertises it as all-purpose...I'll take that with a grain of salt. Looking to grab some sort of holster in the near term, but I will probably only carry this on road trips into the boonies. Tempted to grab one with a coupon on Ruger's corporate store - most of the offerings are leather Bianchi and Triple K, but I'm open to recommendations.

Words of wisdom would be appreciated from any GP100 users or haters.

That's the holster I got for my Redhawk. It goes nicely at the 3:00 position.

As for advice, the Santoprene grips make the magnums a lot easier on your hand.

Yeah, I got the same grips on my 4.25 inch .357, love 'em. Plus they look great.

One of my most cherished firearms this is what I use at home for one of my self-defense weapons bought it back in the 80s and it's never been serviced, nor does it ever need to be for me' it just plain works, and I've shot thousands of rounds through mine.

Wish Ruger would build a GP100 , In 41 mag . Smaller frame double action would make a great carry all purpose house/truck/plinker gun.

Congrats on a good allround handgun.
I started with a 4" Speed Six.
Had a few SBH's in 44 also.
Ruger makes a very dependable revolver.
I also second the 111 holster,my S&W 69 rides in one.

You may want to check out Braids Holsters, USA made in South Carolina. They have well-made leather holsters in stock custom fit to the GP100. The revolver fits snugly in the holster and the trigger is protected as it should be. The cost is under $50. Buy online directly from Braids and save a few bucks. Enjoy the GP100. It lives up to the hype.
Congrats! Resist the urge to try other .357 6-round revolvers. You’re search is over.

Yep, that's all that I shoot in my 5 inch bbl stainless steel model! (y)
Your have picked a fine revolver. You are right the Alaskan is ugly and the short barrel is not fun to shoot. I have 5 GP100s. Two in 44spl, two in 357mag and one 327. I love them all. When new, I found the triggers are not the smoothest. But the more you shoot them the better they get. After a little break-in time I installed some Wolf springs in three of them. In my opinion this made a good trigger into a great trigger.

I like my GP100’s a lot. I was late to the party as I started with a blue Lipsey’s 5” 327 Federal. Next I bought a Match Champion in 10MM & last but not at all least I got a great deal on a used blue 4” 357 Magnum. I am a member of S&W Collectors but have switched more to Rugers for shooting as I also
Like shooting SA a lot and that pretty much leaves out S&W other than antiques. My first two guns types were also not really available from S&W until
They started making Model 610’s again, already have a pre-lock 5” there anyway though.
Love em. Bought my first GP100 when they were called Security Six's, lol. A 6-inch stainless. After around 40k rounds bought a GP100, another 6 ich but blued. Just recently bought the 4-inch stainless GP100. Changed springs in the last two. Wolf springs and have them all 3 shooting nice and crisp. A divorce 35 years ago forced the sale of most of my guns but the Security Six was the one I spared and glad I did. You will get a lot of use out of that one. Enjoy!
Thank you everyone for the contributions. Commitments have kept me from performing the first clean and hitting the range, but I have already begun reading the manual and can't help but take a peak at it out of the safe just to oggle over it.

This was not the first GP100 I had handled in the store, but appears to be one of the cleaner ones off the truck. Probably is of no concern, but the taper to the crown looked a little rougher than what I was expecting. Hopefully it looks better after some Hoppe's 9. I see a hell lot more 38 special locally than 357. I suppose that is to be expected. Glad to hear how loved this model is and that the UMC SJHPs are well liked.

The security/speed six are a different platform - they are just a little smaller/lighter and pre-date the GP100 design and were more costly to manufacture.
I have two 357 Mag stainless GP100s. My 4" is my primary bedside gun. My 6" is used mostly as a range gun. Both are exceptionally accurate and function flawless. I also have a 5" stainless GP100 but it is a 10 shot 22 LR.

Here's my favorite, a 6" made in 1995, I bought it used in filthy dirty condition. The previous owner warned me about the cylinder binding up. I highly suspect he never cleaned the gun. After I cleaned it up, I shot a box of 357s through it and it never bound up once. It turned out there was a very nice revolver hiding under all that crud.

Congrats! I'm a big GP100 fan. Mines a stainless 3" Wiley Clapp but I really want to add a 4.2" as well. Drop some hard hitting hard cast ammo in it and it'll work just fine as a woods gun all the way up to and including black bear. For people defense a good hollowpoint is all you need. They are tanks and will last pretty close to forever.
