RED DOT SIGHT?

326 Views 16 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  JTJ
Looking for experience from shooters that have the same problem as I. My eyes can barely focus on the rear sight and then very poor vision of front sight and target. Did not have this problem when young. Now I wear progressive lens and there is not a place in them I can see both. I shoot best without glasses focusing on the rear sights and making the best I can of the front sights and target.

Has anybody eliminated this problem with a red dot sight?

As I got older your experience is exactly what happened to me. Trifocals helped for a while. The midrange focus was not perfect, but it worked. A red dot is a good solution. However, if you have astigmatism, the dot might not look perfectly round. I don't have dots on all my guns. I'm also focusing on the rear or front sight and just figuring it out. Good luck. Keep shooting!
Been there done that. My long guns are all scoped, yes even my levers are too. My pistols all have aftermarket sights that help a little,44 mag SBH has a peep for the rear , which reminds me I need to order one for my gp100. The micro 9 has crimson trace laser grips not good in daylight but great in low light. The best I found for my 61 year old eyes is vortex venom on a ria gi 45 I love it. It's my favorite . I can shake I can dance all over the target, but when that dot get to where it needs to be its like iam 40 again.
Astigmatism, near sighted, lasik, everything just dandy for awhile. About age 50 threw in the towel and accepted optics on everything. (Almost everything) Yes there was some fuzzy starbright phenomenon, but easily overlooked. SigSauer red dots and Burris AR332 has made me a happy camper with minimal hassle.

Ive found red dots turned down cut way back on astigmatism flair or burst. I put a RDS on my anaconda and cut my group in 1/2 or better.

It is the front sight that matters. Focus on that and let the other 2 blurry. Nobody can focus all three at the same time.

For astigmatism, prism scope is an alternative to red dot for rifle. No good for pistol.

Red dots help a lot of shooters. I have astigmatism and mine on my duty weapon is a starburst. But for minute of bad guy shooting, it's a non-issue. When I want to do some precision stuff or long range, turning the dot down cuts the starburst down.

Biggest deviation from how you've been shooting your entire life will be where you focus. Iron sights you focus on the front sight but with a red dot, you focus on the target and superimpose the dot onto it. If you focus on the dot, it induces misses to the sides when shooting multiple targets.
Just go to a shooting range , see if they have a handgun with a red dot sight mounted that you can rent and try it ... You gonna Love It !

Because of age , detached retina's and other eye related problems ... I had given up shooting handguns ... Then I spotted a Ruger MKII with a Millet SP-1 Red Dot Sight ( old tube type red dot) mounted on dealers counter ... He said you ever shoot a Red Dot ... I say Heck No , never saw one ... he say's here , go into range and shoot it ...
Love at first shot ... I could hit the target again . All you use is your distance vision , the dot is not focused on but simply placed on the target , pull trigger ...Bullseye !
These new compact red dot sights are so small they aren't much bigger than an adjustable rear iron sight ...wish I had one !

Turning the red dot from full blast to a much lower setting also helped me. The brighter the dot, the more the astigmatism is a factor for me.
If you can find one pick up a Keltec P17 MSRP $199 then go to the Keltec website and order the Crimson Trace red dot and slide combo for $199.99.
My wife took mine and I am looking for another one.

I'm VERY near-sighted, and wear contact lenses for distance. Have astigmatism, and, now due to age, I'm loosing my near vision (wearing reading glasses).

I had a moderately successful solution, which you can try, and that was to find a pair of reading glasses that would work for you to see the front sight the best. Then, you can get inexpensive shooting glasses with that magnification. It worked OK for me, front sight sharp, rear a little blurry, and target a bit blurry.

The issue for me, was that shooting at matches all day, my eye would get tired, as everything at distance is a bit blurry.

I finally got optics for all my guns. It is so much nicer, as I just wear un-magnified shooting glasses, and can see the target well, without fatigue. The dot is a bit of a star shape, but for competition with a good sized dot (I use 6 MOA on one) or 2MOA dot + 32 MOA circle, the astigmatism is no problem.

I wish I had done it sooner, rather than trying trifocals (had to tilt head), progressives, and 2.5x magnified shooting glasses. They worked, but only mediocre. You can always give it a try, as it may work great for you and your type of shooting,

Now, I just have to learn how to get the dot on target quickly. :)

Red (and green) dots are salvation for those of us oldsters with bad or fixed eyes. (I had both eyes repaired with new lenses because of cataracts three years ago). I went from extreme nearsighted (but corrected with glasses) to slightly farsighted with glasses, to correct for reading and driving. I bought several red dots (and one green) for my favorite target shooters. My 617-10, my Single-10, my 10-22, my Charger, and both of my Sig 365XL's (for SD carry). I put a laser grip on my 637, and my GP100 357. Worth the investment. Easy to aim, and all are accurate to shoot, after a bit of reorientation on sighting.

I bought a Sig 320 with the Sig red dot. Just bought the Max9 with the CT red dot because of the experience and it was a killer deal recently. The deal with the red dot is it makes target acquisition easier with both eyes open so you can look for peripheral dangers in a concealed carry situation. It takes a little practice but it is acually very easy to find your target and lock and still see around your area.
It takes a good bit of practice to get the presentation consistent so you don't have to hunt for the dot. Does not require ammo to practice. Once learned you focus on the target and the dot will be there. Do not focus on the dot. You will need more practice to stop moving the gun when you pull the trigger. It will show you how many mistakes you are making. Once you get it down you will be a very good shot. I am still learning.

They do that. My took my stereo system, said she wanted it as part of her half. Found she put it in a storage bin and bought a cheap plastic cased turntable, FM receiver combo to use.
Thanks everyone, you all got me the information I needed. The red dot looks like the answer to my problem. And I will as advised see if the range will rent a gun with a red dot sight to try out.

We are still married and she shops in my safe. After 57 years I am used to it. Lot of duplicates in the safe. She still lets me clean them. I make her load her own magazines to slow her down. She only likes to shoot semi autos now so her custom 17HM2 bolt went to our new grand daughter in law along with 3500 rounds.
