heck i would go with the 7.5" if price matters. i have a leather shoulder rig for mine. im not dirty harry so it hangs all the way to my waist.i never tried quick draw but if grizz is hungry it probably could come out faster than finding a sharp stick. i paid $327 for my blued 7.5" redhawk in 1994. my have prices changed! i used 300NBC cast bullets in it back than for IHMSA.lots of 300 grainers, its a tough gun! i cross wonderfull Wyoming twice a week in a big rig for 6 years now. just love those white outs. good luck with those grizz.man thats alot of cash for a new one
Redhawk/SRH in 5.5" or 7.5"?
Hey all, this is my first post, and I need some opinions. I am hunting a lot in Bear country (Grizzly bear, not black...), and am buying a pistol for woods carry/defense, and a .44 mag seems to be my best choice with Buffalo Bore 305 gr. loads.
My dilemma is to get the Redhawk in 5.5" or the Super Redhawk in 7.5". I would like the 5.5" because of the ease to carry in a holster and it being lighter, but some love the longer barrel of the SRH with the huge Buffalo Bore loads.
If I bought a Redhawk in 5.5" I would buy new, but I know someone who would sell me a SRH 7.5" that is roughly 6 years old, shot less than 25 rds. for about $300. I know you all are going to say not to pass up that price, but is the 5.5" really going to be worth my extra expense to buy a new one for ~$750? Thanks!

I do prefer a 5 1/2", but that's a heck of a price on a SRH. For that price I could live with the extra 2" of barrel and, yes, that longer barrel will help with the heavy loads.

Yeah I'm guessing you're talking about I-80 between Rawlins and Cheyenne, eh? Pretty nasty stuff, I do agree. Yeah I really want the 5.5", but if I can get the 7.5" for that price, I'd be a complete idiot not to jump on it. And I did some research and found some break-away holsters that would eliminate the hassle of the 7.5" drawI do prefer a 5 1/2", but that's a heck of a price on a SRH. I'd buy the SRH and sell it for $600 to $700 and use that money to buy the 4" Redhawk.
I have the 5.5 and would prefer the shorter 4" for hiking (not hunting). I speak from experience with hundreds and probably thousands of miles of hiking. When it comes to hiking, you will regret not getting the shorter barrel.

Hard to beat $300 for a SRH. Heck, don't let a deal like that slip through your fingers. If you are going to hunt with it i would go for the 7.5" ....if you are going to carry for SD only then the Grizzly or whatever is going to be close so it wont matter and i would go for the 5.5" for ease of carry and point-ability.
I would definately go with the 7 1/2". In all the years I've been gun shopping I've only ever seen 1 5 1/2" Red and it was blue and looked like it had been drug behind a truck for a few thousand miles. Unless you already have honed in on a 5 1/2" I'd say you've got a long wait ahead of you. I've had my 7 1/2" since '83 and it's a shooter and keeper.
You need to break the arm off to buy a SRH for $300. That price is a gift.

I got mine the same type of gift price. Has the older type grips. So next time I see some better I will buy them. The recoil tends to beat up my middle finger knuckle by the trigger guard. Custom grip and finger depressions like the new ones will "blend off" the trigger guard. The post style frame makes different grips easier than the full back strap of the Redhawk.

I would prefer a 5 1/2 myself but for for $300? You cant go wrong there. If nothing else buy it, carry for a year or 6 months or however long it takes to save up again for the 5.5" you want then you can have 2 guns and who knows, maybe you will stumble across a used one for a deal in the mean time.
I shoot 300gr noslers in my redhawk 7.5" and appreciate every ounce it weighs and for $300 for a SRH I would already have it heck I paid darn close to that for my redhawk almost 20 years ago

Wyoskier.... buy the 7-1/2" SRH and have a GOOD smith shorten the barrel----and set back the original SRH front sight base. Unless he solders the base (Ruger electro-silver solders the SRH base), have smith drill and countersink screw. A drop of "Loctite 360" under screw.

john hupy.... don't suppose you rang many rams with those 300 grain pumpkin balls. I tried to outrun a blizzard with the pickup loaded with elk. Drove 33 hours nonstop whiteout between Butte and Lawrence, Kansas. Hang in there,
