Anyone have a favorite light load. Always used 23gr ww296 and 240 gr bullets, getting too old and wimpy for that anymore. Used up my 700x using 5.5 and 8 gr with 200gr billets. Have some 231 and 800x on hand.

Check on Hodgdon's Reloading Data center online.

They have good quality test data.

My favorite light 44 load is 8 grn Unique and a 240 LSWC. I know that's not 231 or 800 but it's my favorite.

Lyman 3rd Edition shows a start load of 9.1gr W-231 with a max of 12.6gr. COL @ 1.690". Do not use a magnum primer with this powder. According to the manual this was their most consistent/accurate load for a 200gr.

10.0 grains of 800x under a 200gr bullet is a nice mild load, pushing the bullet to about 1070 fps from an 8" barrel. 12.5 grains is a more moderate load, about 1300 fps from the same barrel. I've gone as high as 14.0 grains, but I don't like using 800x at that level, a slower magnum powder would be more appropriate.
