I'm wondering which caliber Remington 700D rifle to get? It is available 30-06, .270, .243, 7mm, .300 Win Mag, .308 and several others.

I'm thinking more in terms of practicality over performance. Which is the cheapest and/or most commonly available caliber that I could also use in other rifles I may come across? I don't want to get one chambered for some exotic cartridge.

.308. There's a huge variety of readily ammo types.

.308. It's the cheapest up there with near 30-06 ballistics. A .243 if you have youth wanting to shoot it. Fun fact, a .243 is just a necked down .308.
