I inherited my dad's ruger mark1 i know absolutely nothing about this gun i have a serial number of 172679 i would feally like to know how old this pistol is.

It would appear your Dad's Mark-I was built in 1959, based on this, from Ruger.
Ruger Standard and Mark I Serial Number History

You can always call and verify, and Ruger does offer (for $10) a certificate about the gun - year, maybe even date - of production, etc. Sort of like a "certificate of authenticity" or a birth certificate.
