It's actually manganese bronze copper alloy, not brass. Harder and heavier than brass. Heavier than the aluminum alloy frame as well. Changed the balance a bit, and I like the feel, and the reach to the trigger is lenghthened enough to get my finger tip over the trigger instead of the first joint. More pictures, in profile.

I always thought the Lightning frames looked a little odd in the shape.

That said, your revolver is beautiful and you did a really nice job fitting it.

Is there a benefit to the style of grip frame, or is/was it primarily cosmetic?

The attraction was cosmetic. Originally I wanted to try it on my Wrangler, but depite they use XR3-Red grips, the frame screw holes don't line up as an XR-3 frame. So I put it on my Single-Six. It was then I immediately noticed it fit my hand better and increased the reach to the trigger. Still wouldn't put one on my Vaquero 44 though. That's got oversized Texas grips on it to help with the weight and recoil.
