On the scout, why do many recommend using a fixed scout scope (like the leupol FX-II $299) as opposed to a zoom scope on the forward factory rail for eye relief? You can use this rifle for longer distances so a variable to me sounds like it would be a better option.

Short answer, it dependes.
The 2.5x is good for all ranges up to about 300 and then it gets hard to see anything beyond that, And thats with a heavy duplex.

If you feel the need to have more magnification, thats your call, keep in mind that the variable IRE scope is longer, heavier and more expensive. Those statments are only true if we are talking about the 1-4x leupold that is offered through thier custom shop. I can't offer any help with the other brands of scout scopes.
