I have a Ruger #1 in 7mm-08. I want to scope it with a Leupold VX-R 3x9 40mm objective scope. I plan to buy Leupold rings (30mm).

Do I need the high rings or would the medium be just fine?

Leupold should have a diagram that shows the dimensions of that scope. The critical one is the clearance between the forward objective and the barrel. They should also show the dimensions for the rings.
You should be able to determine the height of the scope over the bases and see the amount of room you will have.

You always want the scope as low as you can get it.

Without the rifle in front of me, I cannot tell you the amount.

In theory you should be able to go with medium rings, (4b30) front and back. The mediums are supposed to accommodate scopes with an objective up to 42mm. The only thing you may need to be concerned with is the total size of the objective bell, which is right at 46.5mm. Some years ago I had a scope that had a 42mm objective which I mounted on my M77, the down side was the scope had an AO which drastically increased the size of the objective bell. Long story short I ended up installing higher rings, (5/6 vs. 4/5) to make it come together.

Ooops.........I was talking Ruger ring not Leupold, sorry.

Thank you. Out of an excess of caution, I ordered the high Leupold rings but I think I will also order the mediums and try them first. Then send the highs back unopened if the mediums do work.

Is there a specific reason why you are going with the Leupold rings vs. the Ruger?
The only reason I ask is because I'm pretty sure the Leupold rings are single screw per side where as Ruger are two per side. I have a set of Leupold extra high rings on one of my VT's and its single screw.

Height rings for Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40 on No 1

Doesn’t Ruger #1 require Ruger rings due to unique bases milled into receiver? What height rings are needed to mount Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40 on a No. 1? Can low rings be used, or does it require medium height rings?

The Ruger No.1 rifles with a quarter rib do use the Ruger unique ring mounting system, but several other manufacturers make compatible rings that fit. For example I've used the Leupold low Ruger rings with a Leupold 3.5-10x40 scope on a No.1. Be aware that rings from other manufacturers may be a different height than the factory Ruger rings, for example the Leupold rings I used were lower than the Ruger low rings. When the No. 1 was introduced, scopes were typically longer than scopes commonly used today. When the scope is set back for proper eye relief, some of the shorter scopes may hit the front of the quarter rib, so you may need higher rings to provide clearance between the scope bell and the quarter rib.
