I own a tire shop, & last week a lady came in with her grand daughter's car with a bad tire, that had been run flat, that she wanted replaced When taking it off, I thought I noticed a hole in the steel wheel, on the outside lip where valve stems are positioned. When I got the tire off, the hole was a bullet hole the size of a nickel. No bullet in the tire, so it must have exited. Any thoughts on the caliber? I'm thinkin .357 at least.

I tried that once. A piece of steel about a quarter inch thick. About twenty feet away. The ricochet caught me in one of my thighs. Missed Mr. Happy by a few inches. I had to dig it out of my own leg. Did not go in too far and only hurt later on.

I was a lot younger and dumber when I tried that foolish stunt. When people start to do "range experiments" on hard objects I bow out gracefully.

If I wanted to duplicate such foolishness I have put the firearm in a rest, used a lanyard and been behind a barrier out of any possible path.

I'd check for spalling around the hole. This might indicate a high speed bullet. Other than that, who could say? A nickel is a pretty big hole.

When I tried things like that I tried them with a welders apron and an old style steel face plate and welders golvs still not a good idea but less unsafe. I would think it had to be a rifle caliber unless an oddbal like check7.62x25 tokarev smg ammo that stuff was hot. I had some that would go thru the forn of a level 2 vest and out thw back.
