a friend of mine wants me to make him a set of grips for his 60's era single six buntline which i believe is an old model and all i have is a 70's era new model single six. so what i need to know is will grips that fit my new model single six fit his old model single six?

Yes if his is after 1962; those old models have the same profile as new models within Ruger's normal slight manufacturing variations.

BUT, the 9 1/2" barrel was introduced in 1959 so he could have an XR3 grip frame, pre 1962.
So have him look at the number on the grip frame.

After 1962 the Old model part # is XR3-RED.
New model (1972) #'s are: Early = NXRE-RED, Late = XRN-3RED, With lock = XR&L.
