This may be a stupid question but here goes. I just purchased my first semi auto. pistol an SR40, while making my self familiar with it's operation I noticed I could only engage the safety when it is cocked, is this normal or should I be able to engage it at any time?

Welcome to the forum from Phoenix!

Yes, your SR40 is working properly. The only semi autos I have with manual safeties you can engage uncocked are my Berettas and my Luger P08. The Berettas thumb safety is also a decocker.

The SR40, like the SR9 is a well laid out weapon and you did well to observe the frame safety only engage's when the pistol is ready to fire. Read your owner's manual and enjoy your new pistol. Welcome to the clubhouse.
