I am planning on buying a Galloway precision stainless steel guide rod for my SR45 and I noticed they offer different spring rates. I know the stock spring is 18lbs. I was wondering if there would any benefits and/or drawbacks to choosing a heavier or a lighter spring, or if I would be better off sticking with the factory 18lbs. Thanks

Simplifying it a great deal, without being technical.

The recoil spring "weight" matches to the ammunition used.

People who reload, especially, often make a load much lighter than the factory weight was intended for.

Therefor to match the cycle rate of the slide with the lighter recoil, a lighter recoil spring is used.

Vice versa for heavier loaded ammo.

For nearly everyone, the factory weight is fine. The indication of needing to fine tune is if you start getting jams,failures to feed, to eject, etc due to the slide cycling to fast or too slow.
