I recently obtained a 10/22 with a composite stock and a "matte stainless" finish. I've heard that this matte finish is really just silver-colored paint. Anyone know the facts?

What He said. Although Brownells use to sell (not made by them) both a solid stainless tricked out trigger group and also a stainless maxed out receiver. It promised to make for a heavy gun and I think that was it's undoing. If I was ever to want a 10/22 I'd sure like an all stainless one. Smithy.

On a "stainless" 10/22, the only visible stainless parts are the barrel and bolt. The bolt and some action parts are stainless on all 10/22s.
