This is a favorite discussion of mine. Generally, your top 3 has 1 shotgun gauge, 1 rimfire cartridge, and 1 centerfire cartridge but your top 3 can be anything you want it to be.

My favs are: 20 Gauge (use the 12 and the .410 a lot as well, but love the 20), .22 WMR, and .270 Winchester (best dern cartridge ever devised). I can easily do all my hunting with these 3 and usually do.

12 Gauge, .223, .22WMR..... I don't hunt big animals much, mostly varmint. If I needed one for big animals, my .308

My favorites--- 12 gauge, 7mm-08, .45 (my new .223 may be taking one of these places as the most frequent I shoot) Some of this has more to do with a gun I have in the caliber more than the caliber itself.

End times scenario, if I could only grab 3---12 gauge, 30-30, .22 ( a lot of this is caliber specific and its commonplace availability is a huge factor) The more I think about this one, I might go 12 gauge, .223, .45.

I very seldom use a shotgun anymore, If I did it would be a 12ga, a 270 Win and a 50 cal BP Rifle.

Sorry Trigger Creap, ------ but the 45/70 and .243 are kind of permanent around here.

Hope to take a few years more critters with the 45/70 and there are some furry four legged critters that need the help of the .243 w/55gr Nosler Balistic tips. Oh my, takes me back to the days with the 22/250!
