Bullet found in doorway
By David Williams

LETHAL: The .22 calibre bullet found in Walthamstow High Street on a market day morning (D6W1001)

LIVE ammunition has been found lying in the doorway of a busy high street shop.

The .22 calibre short round bullet was found at the entrance of the 99p Stores in Walthamstow High Street on Wednesday morning, November 1.

Haroon Khan, who has a firearms licence and is a member of a local gun club, was alarmed to discover live ammunition in a Walthamstow doorway.

The bullet, of Swiss origin, was still in its brass casing, complete with enough gunpowder for it to fire itself.
continued...

Mr Khan said that if it had been struck hard enough or exposed to heat it could have gone off.

"This sort of thing should not be lying around. It was live, primed and active," he said. "But rather me pick it up than a little kid.

"How can you feel safe when you are finding things like this on the street?

"To get hold of one of these is not easy. You have to go through a scrutinised search, you need a licence and you have to belong to a club."

Ammunition of this kind would ordinarily be used in a small handgun or pistol, and both can be owned legally under licence.

But to leave strictly controlled goods out in the street would be enough for a firearms licence to be revoked.

The bullet has been examined at a Metropolitan Police laboratory and details about it kept for future reference.

A police spokesman said: "Recovering firearms and ammunition is a priority for the police. We take the same view of ammunition as we do of a gun.

"If it goes bang, it is still lethal."

Police are treating the unattended ammunition as a crime. Mr Khan alerted them at 10.16am, and they arrived at his shop to pick up the bullet at 11.32am.

History lesson, Tim---when WWII happened-Britain was terribly underarmed....militarily and civilian-wise both. Our gov't shipped them tons and tons of weapons and ammo, and the appeal went out to the civilians in the USA to donate any long guns and handguns we could spare to save the British from the imminent invasion they feared. All across the land, good Americans gave up weapons and ammo from Grandpa's shotgun to deer rifles to new guns and sent millions of dollars worth of guns over for the British who were defenseless. Immediately after the war-the Brits gathered them all up and took them out to sea and dumped them....hadn't learned a stinking thing about life....all that sacrifice for nothing-and they've become more and more restrictive ever since...to shoot a burglar in your home will land you in prison in Britain today......They remember what happens when you have a dissenting faction in your society and they are armed, however poorly...and are determined to never let it happen again....Our founding fathers gave pen to our rights to being armed and self-defense against an opressive gov't because they knew firsthand what happens.....I hope and pray we never go to sleep at the switch and end up that way----let the Brits protect themselves with broomsticks next time......

How soon they forget!

The Brits went into a tizzy after that school shooting in Scotland a while ago, and took the "ban all guns" route. They are currently paying the price in increased crimes against persons and have a much higher per capita of robberies while private homes are occupied than we do.

The reason is clear: the burglars know they have nothing to fear from entering a home while it is occupied. Self-defense by armed response is illegal in the UK, (To the best of my knowledge).and defending yourself with a firearm is will get you several years in the slammer.

I guess some people are just slow learners with short term memory problems.

To be fair, the Brits are tough on terrorists and have just released a lot of info on threats that are aimed at us, too. Fox News Channel plans a Sat 4pm special to fill us in-our gov't hasn't done very well at giving us details and things to look for-they've spent lots of money but the average citizen still has his head between his cheeks-we need methods-plans-threats explained to the general public-they haven't ----just generalized stuff----we deserve better. Israel should send us some experts to train our populace on living with terrorism.

The big news write up about 1 rd of .22 short ammo is like most things British concerning guns. Ridiculous!!
As far as terrorism, far too many people here don't seem to remember this happened here and could damned well happen again. Also some think terrorists can be met and reasoned with. This is either the height of naivety or just plain stupidity fostered by the likes of Warren Christopher and others of his ilk, including many of our Senators and Congressmen and women.:(

Denying there's a wasp nest outside the door won't keep you from being stung-we either rise up and deal with it or give up the front door-then the back door---and I don't want to give up one single thing that my brothers have fought and died for...this old let the other guy have the first shot idea just don't work-see above.
