Why do You carry? And what?

3274 Views 112 Replies 70 Participants Last post by  Twobits
I've noticed a few forums here asking about different reasons for carrying revolvers only or bigger more capacity semi-autos etc.
Each of us has a real and very personal reason for carrying. I'm a student of people. I'd really like to see the what's and why's behind people's ideas.
I won't judge You your choice but I will ask questions challenging your thoughts. Seriously, you do you. Will you share why with me?

Thanks!

I carry a simple Glock 44. If I have to fall back to my kingdom I have S&W AR15-22 with two 25 round clips, and a Rossi .357 Magnum lever action rifle loaded with 10.

I carry because not just because I can, but because I've survived a few surgeries(Neck Micro-fracture and Quadruple Bypass surgeries) and am too banged up to run. I worked in the mental health field for many years, so dealing with angry people or those acting strangely, doesn't scare me as much as some people. I'm usually able to talk my way out of most situations. My 2 favorite handguns are a Glock 19 Gen 5 with night sites and a S&W 638 Bodyguard with Hogue grips to give me a better grip on the handgun. I live in a small town in South Texas about 30 miles from the Mexican border. I grew up in this small town, then moved away for almost 40 years, then came back a little over 2 years ago when I retired. I enjoy living in a small town and living a pretty simple life. I usually have a firearm on my person when I'm out of the house or a firearm near my bed. I'm a former Marine('76-'79) and know some former Marines who live in the area. God is great. Life is good...:)

I carry because: #1 I can and #2 for protection. I started with the LCP in the pocket, then moved to IWB with a SIG P938 (9mm and awesome trigger), then the Springfield XD-E but that was too heavy, and recently I picked up the Hellcat RDP. I had to add the Talon grips because the OEM Hellcat grip texture rubbed me raw when it's against bare skin (summer atire). And the Hellcat trigger gave me a blister on my trigger finger after a 400-round range trip (I keep waiting for it's trigger to improve with use but it's not there yet).

I agree with Mr. Pepper Nose that it IS hard to try test out anything without buying it.

Half a lifetime ago I was a traveling auditor for a large corporation, auditing their retail stores, often firing managers after a bad audit. More times than I remember, I was leaving the job site on Friday with 10's of thousands of dollars in cash for a store close-out deposit to the business's bank. I usually carried a Mdl 60, or sometimes a Charter Bulldog 44, as both fit in the same shoulder holster I carried under the vest of my three-piece suit. After that career, I sold most of my handguns. A decade later, having switched careers to my hobby of mixing live sound, walking home one night from the music club two blocks from my home, I got accosted by a punk climbing up my porch steps saying "I've got a knife. I've got a gun." as I was unlocking my door at 3:00AM. I turned and gave him a solid Ric Flair heart chop and sent him falling down three steps into my front yard and dived into my front door. All I had then was my American Arms PX-22, and my Ruger Mk-II. He ran to a car filled with people, and as they drove off, I stood at the door wishing I had a shotgun or AR-15 clone. Now, many years later, I have the armament and defensive levels covered. The neighborhood is a little safer, but not much. I'm not sorry I became a collector after the incident.

I carried in another state for work, and for personal reasons.
It would take years for the work aspect to apply.
I had a Ruger Service-Six in a shoulder rig when robbed at knife point in a mall parking garage.
I convinced the youthful perpetrator to allow me to get my wallet, from my coat.
When he saw Stainless and Walnut, he ran. No shots fired.

I then purchased a 1968 Walther PPK in .380.
I would go on to kill an assailant with that gun. 1 shot = 1 kill.
Given the circumstances, it was an "attaboy" moment.

I carried that Walther when confronted in NYC, and a simple palming out of my coat, got me a pair of raised fists, in the "black power" fashion. "You do you boo... we chillin'."
The most DGU of DGU is never pulling the trigger.

I was later shot-at in an alley, while rendering aid to a GSW victim. A much larger first year of import SIG P226 was displayed, and the malcontents ran.

I'm now far-far away, and likely never in need of a gun, except for two nights ago when some dude slow-crawled my wife entering our driveway. IF I didn't happen to be home at the very same time, what was his intention?
Argue that her signal light was of insufficient brightness? Argue that her turning into a driveway prior to the intersections was irresponsible?
Or just the typical "Hey baby wanna party?"

Was I armed? Was that tactical bag simply work attire? Was it a firearm? Was it merely a distraction from the gun on my hip? Was it "never mind the dog" as she's totally capable of using her P228?

I'd vote for the latter... or her P239 stoked with HST +Ps.

I don't actually carry that often. I live out in country and not much crime in this area. I do have my Kahr CW380 on me when I am out in the yard, but it really doesn't go with me when I go anywhere. Do have a gun close by when I am alone in house but nothing has ever happened around here to perk my worries.

I grew up in the same town I live in now. In the late 50's and 60's, we never needed to lock our doors in our neighborhood. Our next door neighbor was a city policeman. The family on the other side was my junior high coach. We felt safe. Wish today is so innocent as back then.

As a certified member in firearm safety, I've handled firearms for over 60 years. If I had my choice of firearms, I would love to use my two beloved Colt Walkers fully loaded with 60 grains of powder. At least I have 12 shots If that doesn't do the job, I can just club them. Anyway. Just Thinking.

I carry a Ruger LCR in .22 WMR. Having replacement shoulders has resulted in a lack of arm strength and comfort with recoil.

This reminds me of the bear gun I carry when hiking in the woods. It is a Beretta 950BS Jetfire 25 Auto. If I get attacked by any bear determined to eat me, it is small enough to get into the mouth and shoot upwards into the brain cavity...........No!...............Not the bear's mouth............. Mine!

I carry because when seconds count, the police are just minutes away. And that's not a knock on the police, I've been one for 20 years. But that just means I know it's an absolute fact. Your town can have the best cops in the world but if they're 5 miles away when someone tries to hurt you, they can't defy physics and get there in an instant.

My what is a S&W 442. I call it my American express because I never leave home without it. It rides in my pocket as my backup while on duty, and either in the same pocket or on my hip IWB off duty.

I carry nothing. I live in the People’s Republic of New Jersey, where our state government continues to maintain that government bureaucrats can arbitrarily decide who deserves to carry, despite the US constitution.

Why wait you are missing out on the migration.

I carry because I believe in the old saying: God created man, Sam Colt made them equal. At 75 I'm not about to go mano, mano with someone 50 years younger.

I carry a P224 and I just purchased three P365's which will become my new carry, I never buy just one carry, and I always also get spare barrels as well. I practice 2 in the chest and 1 in the head in 2 seconds from 20 feet and I have no clue why anyone gives a c...p about sights. Practice, practice, practice.

So many of you I wish I could quote or reply directly, my thanks to all of you.

When I was 20yo, walking home from a friend's place I was jumped by 5 cars full of young angry men. This was just days after these same guys had put 3 friends into the hospital. Unarmed and severely outnumbered I used to only resource left, the speed of great fear, extreme mental agility. Fortunately, I have a father who had spent his life bouncing between the military and law enforcement and had taught me how to escape a hopeless situation.

Since then, I had a military career with escape/evacuation/evasion training, and have traveled to over a dozen countries where even the knife in my pocket was a crime to carry.

I find that my choice to carry as complimentary to my mental preparations for outside of the Castle excursions. I see that is also echoed by many of you.

I carry for a few reasons.....
First is that I'm retired LE and have had an up-close and personal look at predatory evil. It's not always where and when you think it will be. I retired from a very well trained agency and still retain most of my skill set for putting rounds on target in a timely manner and with good judgement. I'm fortunate to have my own range to run drills and keep my hand in.
If I were to find myself in a situation I could have helped and could not do so because I chose to be unarmed that day - I'd have a difficult time dealing with that.

I live in a coastal environment where it;s shorts and t-shirt weather from May to late September. During those hot/humid months I carry a Kahr PM9, owned since late 90's when it was about the only 'tiny 9' on the market.
Optionally, a S&W J frame, M640 .357, 2-1/8" bbl. I shoot it well and the SS holds up well in the sweat/ heat/humidity.

Cooler months, usually some variety of M1911 in .38 Super, 10mm or .45. Have just broken in a new Ruger LW Commander .45 and am thinking it will see a lot of carry when weather gets cooler.

Retired LE, with the same reasons as Woodser for why I carry. My snubby SP101 or 642 see a lot of concealed carry time. I'm breaking in a 9mm Sig P938 before it goes into the rotation. When I leave our area, I take one of my compact double stack 9s with 2 spare mags. A full size .45 Sig 1911 goes with me in a shoulder rig or Hill People chest pack for hunting or hiking.

I don't carry because I just don't feel the need to. I think loaded guns are dangerous. I am absent minded and lay stuff down and forget where I put it. I have nerve damage which causes me to hallucinate an see things that aren't there and not see things that are so I don't carry. I also gave up driving. Injury, age, and illness comes to us all. I see other people doing or trying to do things they don't have any business doing. I love guns, I loved driving but I got old. I am not trying to get you all to quit packing but I don't see advice on how to know when to quit or even when and why not to start. Nobody can decide this for you and nobody should try to,!! I do have some envy of you who are toting iron, have healthy bodies etc. I have enough trouble keeping my pants up without putting a chunk of iron on my belt.
