the young, drug addict thug, shoved the stolen pistol in his pants and told his girlfriend that he was going out to get money, even if he had to kill somebody.
a few blocks away the old guy did some stretches before going on his morning walk.
the old guy was walking along when the thug jumped out, pointed the pistol at him and demanded money. the old guy was surprised but the training kicked in.
old guys hands go up and he says, "oh lawdy, having a heart attack!", bends over clutching his chest. thug yells, "give me the money or I kills you!" old guy fumbles in his pocket and pulls out his wallet(left front pocket) and he turns to the right. old guy then extends his left hand and wallet to give it to the thug, but he fumbles and drops the wallet. old guys right hand is in his right pocket and on the gun. as the thug bends down to get the wallet, the old guy squares up to the threat, draws and put's 2 .38spl. rounds into the thug.
old guy calls 911. gives name and location, requests an ambulance because he's experiencing nausea, and chest pain AND, by the way, send the police, there's a guy on the ground bleeding. end of call.
(the police and ambulance showed up at about the same time. the medics determined the thug was dead and the old guy was not having a heart attack, but should go home and rest. police agreed.)

(so the old guy got jumped, but bought himself a few seconds to defend himself successfully. if the police had looked unfriendly/unsympathetic, he could have gone to the hospital and bought some more time until his lawyer could talk to him. not an Academy award winning performance, but good enough.)
