Hello, I recently bought a modified model 98 Mauser that has been re-barreled to “375-338” it is a McGowan barrel it’s a nice little rifle I just can’t seem to find ammo for it or even brass to reload for it. I’m am also a bit confused on the ammo in general, there seems to be a lot of variations of it, “lapua, win mag, Taylor, ruger”. Would 375 Ruger ammunition work in it? I probably shouldn’t have bought the rifle knowing the ammo complications but I just fell in love with it. Any information would help, thanks for your time in advance

Do you know, or can you ask who you got it from who did the work? You might be able to reach out to to the gunsmith who did the work. But yes, it’s a wildcat. The easy answer is that it’s a .338 win mag necked up to .375, but that is an assumption that should not be taken to the bank. It’s probably pretty straightforward once you get it figured out. A chamber cast or fired case sent to Redding or RCBS will get you a set of dies, no problem.

The way the barrel is marked would get me onto the phone to McGowen. It looked to me from the marks that McGowen installed the barrel. That would establish the original caliber. Now the next step is to figure out what the caliber is now. Has the gun been altered since it was put together is the question.

CH4D may be able to help you on the dies. In my experience that company makes good dies and has good customer support. The owner was very helpful getting me going making 256 Newton cases using their dies.

There's an old expression down here about learning how to swim in the deep end of the pond. If you do not reload starting with the wildcat you are in the deep end of the pond. Been there done that.

Right, RCBS no longer offers the custom wildcat die service.
