I bought my first blackhawk .357 convertible the other day. Having trouble with the grips. No two sources agree on what grip size are on this gun. Theres a G and a 4 stamped on the frame. Does anyone know what size grip I have?

R.S. There are two different types of grip frames on Blackhawks. If you have a New Model Flattop, built on the mid-sized frame, it takes XR3 grips. If you have a conventional New Model Blackhawk, it takes XR3-RED grips. If you have an Old Model 3-screw Blackhawk, it may take either XR3 or XR3-RED grips, depending on when it was made. A picture and serial number would be very helpful.
I am going to write this down ... I can't remember which fits what but Iowegan explains it so well !
Iowegan ... Thanks for the concise explaination ...
Gary
Thanks but I forgot to tell you, I need a picture of the rear sights and top strap. If the serial number has a 3-digit prefix, it is a Flattop Blackhawk and if it has a 2-digit prefix, it is a conventional Blackhawk.
A good trick is to wrap a sheet of printer paper around the grip frame and press firmly around all edges for a lasting imprint. Compare to the drawings shown in most ruger-oriented forums with a five second search...
Ruger SA grip frames are not exactly precision made so a bit of fitting is normal. Most custom makers can provide a 98% fit using yo ur imprint as-descibed above. 🇺🇲
R.S. You have a conventional Blackhawk so it takes XR3-RED grips. These are the most common grips that fit Blackhawks, Single-Sixes and short barreled Super Blackhawks so you shouldn't have a problem finding them.
Look up the Altamont factory store on Gunbroker. They start at 9.99 for BH grips. I've purchased several at very reasonable prices over the last few years.
