Watching some YouTube videos and reading random posts online suggest the Ruger "Mini" rifles are unreliable and not very accurate. Reliability induced by bad cheap magazines and user error is suspected in many of these videos and threads. Accuracy seems to be more problematic with various manufacturing issues over time with the Mini-series.
I am looking for a less alarming visual appearance with evil things that turn your rifle into a deranged politician's incarnation of a robotic killing machine with its threaded barrel or bayonet lug. The classic looking wood stock and lack of a flash hider and bayonet lug are also more travel-friendly.
Assuming a new rifle, I am looking at the Mini-14 and Mini-Thirty. With factory magazines or high-quality aftermarket (i.e. not cheap POS options) magazines and quality factory ammunition, what should I expect regarding reliability and accuracy?
I am very good at shooting feral hogs and predatory dogs on the move out to ~200 yards in my livestock pasture and around out buildings for chickens. I travel a lot and want more than a pistol or lever action rifle if I get caught in some civil uprising I can't drive around (i.e. travel secondary roads for a long distance to leave the area). Hence part of my reasoning for not traveling with a 'high profile' AR-15.
So, this means 100% premium factory ammunition and magazines are a reasonable cost option for me as I won't be plinking regularly and actually hope to never need it while traveling so quality and reliability matter if I ever need to pull it out while on the road. Thankfully, my encounters in Arizona and New Mexico were all dealt with a car with a full fuel tank and plenty of open road but, I realize that isn't always an option so here I am.
I would also plan on mounting a Red Dot sight which would likely mean replacing the top handguard since I have a max range of ~200 yards for any reasonable engagement (i.e. it is hard to argue self-defense if shooting at ~600 yards and I don't see shooting aggressive predators that far away either).
Lastly, is the caliber choice. I am initially thinking 7.62x39 so I have more knockdown power if I am attacked while overlanding/boondocking in remote areas where I might encounter larger and tougher predators. Having been attacked by dogs multiple times, I need something effective, reliable, and handy!!!
Am I on the right track looking at the Mini series? Is the Mini-Thirty barrel built for "AK" bullet diameters these days or, are they still .308 Nato sized? Any other "gotcha's" I should consider?
TIA,
Sid
p.s. I live in Texas now but, travel to remote places out West and up around the far North (CONUS) mostly with occasional trips East. I tend to stay at remote state parks or farther out in 'wild spaces' mostly. Self-reliance for personal safety, medical care, etc. is a priority since I spend a lot of time away from other people and cities in general.
