Mini-14 or Mini-Thirty? New guy questions!

I've handled both the older Mini-14 and the Mini-30. I've owned a Mini-30 for 34 years. I really like the Mini platform in any caliber, but for me the Mini-30 has an edge when it comes to versatility.

From what you've described as your needs and situation, a basic Mini-30, either old in great condition or brand new model will do nicely.

The Mini-30 is a medium game getter to 200 yards or better. It does as well on hogs within 200 yards as 6.8 SPC does. By medium game we're talking mammals up to 300 pounds, and that includes black bear.

Ruger initially marketed the Mini-30 as a deer gun and law enforcement carbine. It fills both needs, as well as personal defense for civilians.

We've come a long way since the early days with ammo options. Modern Mini-30s have a nominal groove diameter of .3105". Some early Mini-30s had a nominal groove diameter of 3085" like the one I have. It doesn't matter enough to lose any sleep over.

I wouldn't worry about any negative buzz you hear about Ruger Minis on the web. That buzz doesn't rise above the level of gossip. For example, many insist all Mini-30s still have .308 barrels. The truth is they haven't been made with .308 grooves for about 30 years. There aren't many true experts on the web. There's a whole lotta noise.

For your situation, I would start with a basic, no frills Mini-30... no flash hider, no bayonet lug. Stick with 5 and 10 round magazines when you travel to unfriendly states, and you'll be fine.

And don't freak out over the world ending and SHTF. Just be prepared for come what may as always. Stay away from bad company.
