Mk4 Recoil Spring Adj Subsonic Ammo

I was wondering if anyone came up with a solution to be able to fire subsonic ammo in a Mk4. I recently tried some .22 Long (~710 ft/sec) and besides the mag only being able to hold 5 rnds (more than that, they eject on their own), it wouldn't cycle the bolt.

I've tried the lightest Volquartsen spring with their rod - no go.

So, has anyone shaved a spring or found a replacement recoil spring that allows cycling and is safe or have you found a specific cartridge that works with the OEM spring? Thx

Going to a faster round would be the fix, those wont cycle in alot of autoloaders, not enough energy to push bolt back, change to much inside gun and it might function with full power stuff

Go with a faster ammo. In fact, with a .22 handgun, it’s not worth spending the money on subsonic. A .22 is subsonic from a pistol simply due to barrel length. Even a high velocity .22 lr will be subsonic in a typical-length handgun barrel. So go back to your standard spring and shoot regular velocity cartridges and you will be subsonic and your firearm will cycle.

This ^^ makes the most sense to me, and to most shooters.

However, some people have gone on a quest to make Quiets (no powder) rounds cycle in Mark pistols. Success is achieved only by reducing bolt weight sufficiently. Volquartsen has made some synthetic bolts in the past that worked. But only the bolts for 10/22s were ever sold to the general public. Another guy milled away a LOT of a standard Ruger bolt, leaving only a structural skeleton.

As you would think, these special bolts have to only be used with very low power ammo. The success of these light weight bolts has made me wonder if extra weight bolts could be used to handle Stinger type ammo. I don't have that answer.

These might be the solution if you can find them. They are just a bit higher fps (835) than the CB longs and will also solve the magazine problem.

Something to try in case you are just on the edge of working. Try using Hornady OneShot Gun Cleaner (NOT case lube) on internals. Leaves a dry lube film that's pretty slick. Might give you juuust enough friction-relief to make it work.

But I think brnwlms suggestion will turn out to be what you will wind up doing.

I saw that CCI has a Quiet-22 Semi-Auto round that is 835 fps and uses a 45 grain bullet to work the bolt properly. Impossible to find right now, but has anyone tried these when they were available?

Saw that CCI makes that 45 gr Quiet-22 Semi-Auto. Like to try it but impossible to find. Just looking for 2 boxes (2x50=100 rnds) for an experiment. Guessing things might loosen up in 2022, maybe.

There's a good discussion on CCI Quiets here.

Or...quiets, shorts, longs, LR, all work great in a Single Ten.

If I had an interest in suppressors, I guess I'd probably be looking into "Quiet" ammo too. But what I've noticed is that HV ammo gives me a LOT less muzzle bounce than SV ammo. I can deliver 10 rounds of HV on target in under 10 seconds, but it takes around 15 seconds to do the same with SV ammo because I'm waiting on the front sight to come back down on target.

I think it's because the bolt cycles a lot faster with HV ammo.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Again, I'm a Bullseye shooter with a Mk4 Ruger. Just exploring 'cheap' ways to reduce undesirable movements. All of the top shooters in our league use European gear at +$2000 before mods / red dots, tricked out electronic triggers, etc.

I'll have to try some HV rounds to see if that helps. By no means will I be going to the Olympics. Just having fun.

Rest of the story: I found some CCI subsonic hollow point / small game 45 gr @ 970 fps. I also changed the recoil spring to a 'light' version offered by Volquartsen. Everything worked without a hiccup and my Bullseye scores improved.

Kind of too bad that oddball ammo like the subsonic 45 gr is near impossible to find.
