PC 9 light primer strikes

Anyone out there have any problems with light primer strikes on their PC-9’s ? I’ve been having a lot of non-fires and even the rounds that do fire have a very light firing pin strike on them. I just went completely through it thinking that maybe Ithaca carbon build-up in the f-pin channel or around the f-pin itself. It had some but not what I would consider excessive.

So what do you guy’s or gals say ? Any of the same problems ?

I'd look into gun getting into battery completely first. Remember that Ruger PCC uses the flat area on the rear of the bolt for OOB safety. So, for example, the bolt face getting off somehow could trigger it, by making the bolt effectively longer. Or it could be extractor getting against a rim and not letting the bolt sit in. Or perhaps your deadweight is jammed inside the bolt, causing the bolt not settle just a shade out of battery.

A completely different issue is also possible - like the hammer or its spring being out of spec. But I'd look at the above first.

Thanks zaitcev! I appreciate your input. It was pretty bullet profile sensitive with some flat nosed bullets not allowing the bolt to go fully into battery. I looked at the chamber and rifling with a bore scope and found very little lead-in on the rifling along with a pretty good Barron the lead-in. So I used my finish reamer to clean up things a bit and give it actual lead-in on the rifling which helped immensely.

There was some carbon build up on the firing pin and it’s channel but not really enough to inhibit the firing pin, but the extractor had some carbon buildup on the hook and in the bolt channel that may have inhibited it some, but in my opinion I think the hammer spring should be a little stronger to increase the firing pin strike.

So does anyone offer a replacement spring set with maybe a little heavier hammer spring? I’ve found a few places that offer sear springs and such to improve the trigger which I find ok as is but really nothing else, Wolffe doesn’t seem to offer anything for the PC9 at all. I may just have to call Ruger and talk to them. But the rifle works fine if it sets the primer off and quite frankly it’s incredibly accurate out to 100yds which is as far as I currently have available.

So how far has anyone been able to shoot one of these accurately ? I do like my PC9 which I have a Vortex Spitfire 3x sight on, it works very well if it sets the primer off. I like it !

Before I can honestly say anything worth noting, would need to know if you mean the classic pc9 or the more modern pcc.
Mine is model 19122. Across a wide range of ammunition types and i think 8 different well experienced shooters mine is very accurate, and so far 100% reliable. So far is since early 2018 and in excess of a lot of rnds.
Pay special attention to barrel connection. It matters.

Well, that didn't clear up which rifle you have, at least for me.

I think you are saying you have:

Which I think was the first release of the current PC Carbine.

There is also the Ruger PC9:

which is a different animal entirely and since it came out in 1996, I think, it could be considered the "first version".

I hold about a 3" at 100 yds. depending on ammunition. I have not pushed much past 125 yards, as I run an aimpoint pro. It balances well for me and my normal stance offhand. the dot on the PRO starts covering targets at about 90 yards, so in essence, it is more accurate than me for sure! this was my 125 yard off hand attempt, blazer brass 115 in the snow fom feb.

Zaitcev, I Do shoot my own reloads but mostly Berry’s plated but not limited to them, I shouted very few actual led bullets and when I said “little lead-in” I meant that the chamber was not properly “finish reamed” , this caused the flat nosed Berry’s bullets to not chamber fully because they were contacting the rifling hard before the bolt was closed fully. So this created a non-fire condition because the bolt wasn’t fully closed.

I ran my finish reamer in it and gave the rifling the proper lead-in taper so the bullets now properly chamber and no longer hold the bolt open. Works much better but still is giving me very light primer strikes, think I’ll send a note to Ruger CS to see if they offer a slightly heavier hammer spring maybe.

Maddmatter, that’s really good shooting ! That looks like similar results that I got but I was shooting from a rest whereas you were free standing,,,, impressive ! I just shake to much anymore. I am impressed with how accurate these carbines are ! I found a friend actually has a range setup that he says he believes goes out to 500yds so I may give it a go out to 200Yds but with my current eyesight (cataracts) I’m not sure I could see the target ! We’ll see.
