I purchased my Ruger American Gen 2 on the 20th of last month. Since then, I've sent it in twice. The second time it resulted in a replacement. The replacement, however, is having the same problems. The bolt locks in the upward position just before closing and requires EXCESSIVE force to close it. The cycling speed does not matter. I've tried multiple types of ammunition. I can cycle the bolt easily with no ammunition in the mag. I don't know what is going on with the rifle. I've lubed the bolt and cycled it about 100-150 times. Nothing is working.

Is it possible the bolt handle is moving too far? If you jiggle it up and down, does that allow it to close without the excessive force?

If not, I suspect the mag. The mags were the weak link in the Gen 1 rifles. I looked at a couple of these when they first became available here and did not think they operated smoothly without ammo. I have not tried one with ammo, but I have been told that they work better with ammo than without.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are having . Have you tried a web search?..... "Ruger Gen2 Bolt problems"..

Additionally: Will the bolt close on a snap cap? ...They are somewhat undersized = closes on cap but not "factory" ammo may be a headspace issue. Just a thought.

Stick it out with Ruger . They'll make it right.

OP, I know exactly what you're talking about. I've got a 7-08 that i just bought. My first thought when it did this was that it seemed exactly like a headspace problem. As someone above said, I think it may be a mag problem. It cycles perfectly without a round in it. Mine "seems" to be mainly on the first round out of the mag. It also seems to be getting a little better, and one thing that seems to help is that when I feel it starting to bind up, I'll push the bolt forward a little more and it usually goes right in. I just now finished mounting my scope and plan on shooting it tomorrow. I'll see what I can figure out, if anything.

Well, I had time to put about 20 rounds through the new 7-08 today. The issue with the bolt closing seemed to get better with a few rounds fired. I still think it's something to do with the mag, but didn't have time to really dig into it. I fired a few rounds with the mag loaded in as close to a hunting scenario as possible and everything functioned properly. Also, the mag is far easier to load with the bolt open than closed. Despite the crappy mag system, I think I'm going to like this little rifle. Got some more testing to do, so time will tell.

Clarifying, as months change, you bought it on the 20th of June? I know it wasn't the 20th of last month as none of our shipper choices are that efficient. That's still two trips to the mother ship and back in ~5 weeks time with a replacement, quite good service. Good luck sorting and resolving it.
