Yes! My 583 Tactical fit my 181's stock perfectly. Minor shimming might be appropriate, but none required for mine.

 

What kind of stock are you going to use?

 

A factory wooden stock from 181-186 series.

 

EHT, I didn't have a factory stock for my 181, but a Choate folder made sometime before 1980 (not sure what the original owner did with the factory stock but wish he had included it in the sale). It was a great fit, but I wanted to go back to its original configuration. Closest I could get was a current factory wood stock. I did feel the need to shim with credit cards.

My 583 fit into it (the Choate folder) just fine. If nothing else, it was a tighter fit. I never felt the need to shim but in the end, I preferred the 583's factory synthetic stock (lighter, shorter LOP), to include credit-card shimming it.

I would think (or hope) that if a 580 series fit into a 181-186 series after market stock, the 580 series should have a good chance of fitting into the 181-186 series factory wooden stock. Hopefully the fit would be just tight, and some minor sanding required.

 

EHT, you can rest assured that a 181-on-up receiver will fit any Mini 181-on-up stock, and vice versa. Credit-card shimming would be the most likely solution should there be any slapping around.

 

I just received my 181-896 series stock with some nice tiger striping. The 580 series fit it nicely into the 181-186 series stock. It's a little tight fitting together but it fits with no issue. With some wear the tightness should go away. I didnt see any reason for shimming as some had suggested.

I tried a new 584 series in an old 181 series wood and it fit, however it will need some shimming and or bedding. It appears most of the important dimensions remain the same.

 

Maybe I'm not clear on shimming and bedding

where did you need the shimming? My 5802 pressed right in the stock, screws on each side nice and tight. Trigger group mounted fine

What am I not seeing?


I have a rough idea about what bedding is, might go look at youtube videos.
how would I know it needs bedding?

 

EHT, if it is tight, you probably won't need shimming! The newer Minis fit tighter into an older stock than vice-versa, in my experience. Dropping my 181 into a current Mini wood stock caused me to use credit-card shims near the base of the receiver, on both sides. Easy fix; something I wouldn't have considered but for this forum. It would appear the earlier Minis' receivers were just a tad bit smaller, but nothing that would make them incompatible.

 

The early Mini's are just a few thousands of an inch narrower than the 580 series. It looks like the molds got some tweaking and the new receivers are just a bit bulkier. Yes, I measured my old 183 series against my 580 series and there is a difference. That would explain tight or loose fit depending on what direction you go with the stock conversion.
