Accessory for the AR-556

Acquired an almost new, barely fired AR-556 and had a good first range session with the factory sights. The front sight is standard AR15 with the top of the post approximately 2 1/2" above the bore line, and center of the rear aperture when deployed is approximately 1 1/2" above the base of the picitinny rail. Doing the math, I decided a 1" riser would be needed if I was to mount a scope for load and accuracy testing to raise the line of sight through the scope above the front sight.

Ordered a TruGlo 1" riser and mounted it on the rifle when it was received. See pictures below -

Rifle with riser mounted. The riser does not interfere with the sights, so it can be left in place.

Here I've mounted a Burris 4x scope with low rings. The angle of the photo is not good - the folded rear sight does not touch the scope.

It's raining today, so range testing is out of the question now. Will post a range report when weather clears. Besides the 55 gr. ammo I used in the first range session, I've uncovered some 68 gr. BTHP rounds, and some reloaded 53 gr. HP varmint rounds.

I realize I’m talking to a knowledgeable gunner. However, at the risk of embarrassing myself, set the scope height for comfort and eye box clarity. You won’t see the front sight unless the magnifications are set pretty low.
Thanks for your suggestion. No need to apologize for good suggestions. However, the fixed power, 4x scope will be used for bench rest testing of loads only. I do not intend to use optics for everyday use - iron sights only. At the bench I can adjust myself to the rifle at leisure.

If perchance I find a load shooting dime sized groups at 100 yards, I'll rethink the mounting system. I currently have a 6x20 scope free right now, and with x-high rings, and removing the rear sight and riser, I'll give that a try.

I got this crappy old rear sight laying around that Uncle Sam developed. Boy is it handy😉.

I've been saving them. When I have enough I'm going to use them for door pulls on the cabinets in my gun room.
I bow before thee, for I am not worthy.

I’m considering yanking the red dot off my M4 clone and putting the carry handle back on. The gun feels “so right” with it. It looks proper too.

Yes. The 55 gr. FMJ's used in the first range test were pretty good (see target below). I want to see if that was a fluke. But I'm always open to heavier, more effective bullets if they are accurate. And I'll check out some varmint (4 legged kind) loads. If I find one that's extremely accurate, I'll use the rifle with a scope for varmints. The nice thing about using the riser, the iron sights aren't affected.

9 shot group less than 2" at 50 yards w/iron sights

I used a $50 YHM .5" riser to see if a taller mount worked out better for me before spending money on mounts.

Some quick sight height stuff.
With iron sights you have about 2.6" to the bore centerline.
If it has a railed upper it's 1.215" from the bore CL to the top of the rail, the iron sights are 1.420" to the top of the rail. 2.635"

The first mount I bought was 1.4" tall, same as the irons and found it way too low for me to use.
1.5" mounts aren't any better.
1.6" tall mounts are considered a 1/3 lower co-witness, the front sight will be in the lower 1/3 of the optic.
That isn't too bad for me, still have to scrunch in and kink my neck up but not as bad.

I used the .5" riser with the 1.4" mount and that wound up being the sweet spot for me, 1.90" tall.
Now I just buy 1.93" tall mounts for the scopes that I buy.
No NV stuff, lights, sights or whatever, taller mounts just work better for me.
My Romeo5 red dot has a 1.8" CL that is nice and consistent for me.

Sweet spot for you. Not everyone. I had the 1.40" Leupold AR mount on the AR9 with the VX-R. Perfect for me.

I recently replaced the scope with a Trijicon SRO on a RM34 mount and Troy flip up irons. The SRO centerline is sitting 1.67 over the pic rail top. That works equally well. I like my optics lower and find the 1.40" to 1.60 range good. The irons are in the lower third of the optic.

To each their own.......testing is required.

Nothing wrong with that, if it has an A2 fsb, I want it pinned too, but otherwise low profile set screw dimpled barrel, or clamp on, a little flexbar rocksett, it's not gonna move, even under full auto rates of fire. Tested it. Luke I said I have HIGH standards, and expectations.

I pass on the chrome bore, I want more accuracy, when they bore the barrel out extra to allow the chrome lining, if it's not perfect, its gonna effect the accuracy. On full auto, it doesnt matter. Target guns, a little more. However if I was wearing a uniform in combat in southeast Asia type environment, I'd take chrome lined.

1n9 yep all day long.

Somebody (😘) mentioned Bushmaster. The Hi Point of ARs.

I have one. A Patrolman (M4 clone). It is superior to my Colt HBAR. The fit, finish and assembly would embarrass the double D brand. As well as others. Upper and lower tight as a mouse butt. One of the ones built in Huntsville, Alabama.

ARs are fighting rifles to me. They MUST BE chrome lined, I might consider nitrided.

I Loved my Patrolman ! Buying it back then allowed me enough xtra $ to buy my 1st ACOG at the same time. I shot the Snot outta that combo.
