Acquired an almost new, barely fired AR-556 and had a good first range session with the factory sights. The front sight is standard AR15 with the top of the post approximately 2 1/2" above the bore line, and center of the rear aperture when deployed is approximately 1 1/2" above the base of the picitinny rail. Doing the math, I decided a 1" riser would be needed if I was to mount a scope for load and accuracy testing to raise the line of sight through the scope above the front sight.
Ordered a TruGlo 1" riser and mounted it on the rifle when it was received. See pictures below -
Rifle with riser mounted. The riser does not interfere with the sights, so it can be left in place.
Here I've mounted a Burris 4x scope with low rings. The angle of the photo is not good - the folded rear sight does not touch the scope.
It's raining today, so range testing is out of the question now. Will post a range report when weather clears. Besides the 55 gr. ammo I used in the first range session, I've uncovered some 68 gr. BTHP rounds, and some reloaded 53 gr. HP varmint rounds.
