I have Asthma and noticed a lot of gun cleaners out there bother it.
I was wondering if anyone had something they would recommend that would still clean well, and not harm my guns or lungs in the process.

Thanks in advance.

I have asthma too. My dad always used Hoppes #9 and Break Free CLP to clean guns, since that's what I learned to clean with I still use them. I've never noticed these products causing a problem with my asthma.
Last year I bought Break Free CLP and was disappointed to find that I can't differentiate from Rem Oil.

I can certainly find the L & P parts of it. Seems I just can't locate the C(leaning) part of CLP. It's gun oil & calling it a cleaner is much like calling water a cleaning solvent. Water is indeed a cleaning solvent just as oil will clean -- and both have no offensive odor -- but what's effectively just gun oil doesn't remove lead & copper.

I also hate using CLP to clean when it's oil & oil is a dirt magnet.

The only true gun cleaner I've used is Shooter's Choice X-Treme Clean. It was suggested by a friend with decades of experience, so I trusted him. It works well & has no ammonia in it. He assures me that it doesn't smell nearly as bad as lots of other stuff that will damn near knock you out. It still stinks plenty & demands ventilation.

Seeing how long a 12oz spray can lasts, I've not had need to buy another cleaner yet, so no basis for comparison other than it's not just gun oil as CLP is.

I recommend you try Gunzilla...it's non toxic...no hazardous chemicals...no odor...etc. I began using it because low ventilation was causing me to get headaches from Hoppes 9. I've found Gunzilla to be a good product for my use.

Sometimes the easiest are best. When I have to use cleaning chemicals for an extended time, I work out in the garage with the door open. Then I put a fairly strong fan behind me so that any vapors are blown away from me and in to the great outdoors.

I think you'll have to try to determine what, exactly, it is that's setting your asthma off.

A word of caution(?) about the non-toxic cleaners: Non-toxic neither means nor implies non-irritating. For example, I use a basically-no-odor, non-toxic, bio-degradable carbon solvent sometimes that causes my skin to turn red and HURT if I get some on it and don't clean it off within about 1 minute. I haven't had that response from any of the petroleum-based products I've tried. Even brake cleaner, ether, and gasoline don't do that to me that badly that quickly.

It's kind of an individual thing.

Have you tried wearing a filtered mask like vehicle spray painters use or something similiar?
Do you clean your firearms indoors or out?
If inside, is your cleaning area well ventilated?

I always clean my guns with fans, and open windows. Wearing a mask seems like a good idea, I'm gonna go buy a few tomorrow.

Gunzilla is the way to go, IMHO.

I have compromized lungs and can not tolerate the usual gun cleaner fumes.

Gunzilla, no problem. . . it is plant based product, easy on the lung and hands and cleans and lubes amazingly well.

Best of luck, Viking Queen

Froglube is all natural and biodegradable. Nice minty odor and non toxic. It is all I use on my guns, knives, and fishing gear. Cleans, lubricates and protects metal surfaces and even brings a shine to the polymer frames without damage. Try it!

I have asthma and have never had a problem with Hoppe's #9 bothering me.

I like Ballistol for its cleaning and lubricating properties, but it irritates the heck out of my lungs. I use it, but only when I can work outdoors.

I have been seriously thinking of installing a basic kitchen range hood over my workbench. It would work like a fume hood in a laboratory.
