Powder Inc cylinder loader

Got one recently and it works, however, the way the ROA cylinder is, the cam action of the device is right where the slider changes direction, so the collar can't be used. To set the collar at the ball just inside the cylinder, the thing won't release enough (raise the arm) to get another ball between the cylinder and the jag. I'm talking with the maker and he's going to get back with me. It seems like the jag plunger should be about 1/4" or so shorter, then the cam action would be more or less horizontal instead of where it tends to bind.

I ordered a straight line toggle clamp, thinking I may just make my own to fit exactly what I want. ROA is the only cylinder I load BP. The toggle clamp has an internal thread (5/16 I think) for the press so a bolt could be used for different lengths of jags. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Straight-L...DeStaCo-630/223200882245?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
I think the toggle clamp method is a better idea than these straight arm presses with a sliding driver.

Did you get the original or the #2? Do you know the difference? The website is a bit unclear. I have been looking at it to replace my loading stand setup.

I got the $110 version, figuring another $20 is nothing. I'm willing to work with the guy, but I'm really not impressed with the design. It kinda binds where I want to press the ball into the cylinder, so it's not smooth. It's also bare steel and the sliding piece on the op rod has a little home made nib to attach the pressing rod that's kinda funky. I'm really thinking the linkage system of the clamp is mechanically a better way to go. It shouldn't be hard to bolt the clamp to a piece of angle iron or similar and weld or fix a base on it somehow. I almost wish he would take it back but I haven't approached that subject. It did come with all sorts of center pins and a couple jag's to press in different size bullets/balls. So it can be used with a variety of cylinders. But probably works better with shorter cylinders than the ROA.

I also ordered a 12" piece of SS 1/4" rod to see if I can make a base pin that fits better than the OEM. If I get anywhere with that I'll post it.

I got the straight line clamp the other day and it too has a bit of binding while operating. I tried some Rig on it but didn't help much. Tried some Moly dry slide lube and that did the trick. So I went back to the Powder Inc loader, tried the moly and it didn't help much. So i noticed that just a bit of pressure on the top of the jag shaft near the pivot away from the knob resulted in no binding. So I took a rubber band, folded it in half and stretched it from the top of the jag shaft near the pivot to the large holding rod. Now the thing works like it should with no binding. I think I'll arrange a spring instead of the rubber band, it will be a little more elegant and last longer. Maybe even look like it belongs there.

Anyhow, I may go ahead just for a project to see about making another loader with the clamp device. It shouldn't be hard, just lining up the shaft and perhaps a bit of welding for a base, plus some sort of pin and cylinder holding arrangement. A 1/4" bolt with the head cut off should work. The clamp shaft has a 5/16 internal thread, so a bolt with the head cut off and drilled for the ball shouldn't be hard.

The clamp device has a 2" operating length, which is 1/2" more than the Powder Inc. The PI device is a bit short with large cylinders to get the cylinders on and off, or I may have to cut the cylinder holding pin off a bit to make it easier to get the cylinder on and off the loader.

The jag rod on the PI loader is only a 1/4" rod while the clamp rod is more than 1/2", much more robust. Plus the clamp device is a forged metal frame with cad or zinc plate, not bare steel.

What would also be really helpful is if the PI loader had some threaded holes to store the unused pins a counter sunk screw for the unused jag and a couple holes of the 2 Allen keys for storage instead of the plastic bag. I'm sure those things will disappear real quick if not stored correctly. I may just add them myself.

Here's the clamp. There's a picture of the PI on their website. It's the one with 2 horizontal pieces and is $110 delivered. The clamp has a solid 2" travel and with using a bolt, you can extend the dimension as you like. Of course it would take some fabrication to get the thing made, but it's not magic. I plan on doing it with some hand tools and some junk angle iron/steel. I do have a gas welder.

If I did it again, I'd build it. I haven't heard back from Powder Inc. and I gave him a bunch of hints how to improve his product. It's up to him, at least I've got it working good enough to use now if my plans don't work through.

The clamp I got was a bargain. They usually go for $20-30. I got it for $14 and there's only a few left, I see the price is going up on them. Any 300# clamp should work, but make sure on the travel.
