What in your opinion makes a good holster, retention, leather quality ???
Quality of materials. Fitment. Edge finishing. Detail work. Quality and consistency of stitching. I've done leatherwork part time for 8yrs. There ain't but ten dollars worth of material in a holster. So you can bet that if they cheap out on the leather, the rest of it is highly suspect.

Really like my Simply Rugged Sourdough leather pancake holster for both my GP100s:
GP100 Match Champion 10mm 4.2" barrel
GP100 22.lr 4.2" barrel

Keeps both secure on my hip for CCW, woods carry or range BUT it does ride high on your hip.

Recommend you get the IWB leather straps. I need to order a set myself.

my GP100s ride in Bianchi.....I like the coverage...and the thumbsnap retention...and has belt slots for strongside or cross draw.... View attachment 152446
That is NICE! I'm havin the same problem with the new 627 Tracker + bein southpaw doesn't help. Found something on Etsy (never used it before) for cheap so I ordered it. Now I just ordered it last week + it's coming from Turkey so guess when it'll be here? If you said TODAY you're right. I'll let OP know if it's any good. Gonna head over to Simply Rugged now.

I like both leather and Kydex. Kydex has a lot going for it - easy, audible re-holstering, sure retention, fewer contact points on the gun (less finish wear), does not retain dirt and grit, waterproof. While I have many leather holsters, I prefer Kydex for competition, but my experience with it there has led me to consider it for everyday carry.

One of my competition guns is a GP100 Match Champion in 10 mm (only use it with .40 S&W for IDPA) and I am using (and liking) this holster...

While it is branded Speed Beez, it is made by Comp Tac. Just throwing it out there for you to consider.

One last note - should you choose to go with leather, you want to avoid holsters that are boned tightly enough to show the cylinder flutes - unless they are specifically for your 5-shooter. A 6-shot GP100's flutes are positioned differently than your .44 Spl.

Adios,

Looking for any recommendations for a holster for the revolver noted above. I'm open to all materials. Not looking for concealed carry, just something for out in the woods type use. If it's leather, needs to be more on the softer more pliable side. I've been turned off on very stiff leather holsters. Kydex is very very low on my list. Price middle of the road.
I'll second that motion for Bianchi. I'm no holster expert but I've been very happy with every Bianchi I own. For my GP100 4.2" it's a Bianchi #5BHL. It's an excellent fit. Now as I've heard others say, this rides rather high on the hip, and that's why I mount it on the opposite side at about 10:00 for cross draw. It's comfortable there and makes for a fast draw, faster than riding high on my draw side hip. Threading my belt through both slots doesn't make for a good cant angle, so I only use one for a suitable cant and it still rides stable like that. I'm seeing it now on Amazon for about $45.

I like the Simply Rugged holsters but they are a bit pricey ...
They are all I use on my farm. These are heavy duty, rugged holsters and they will last you a lifetime if you take care of them. I own three now (full flaps and a pocket holster) and I’ve never had a failure of any of them. They do not make a tanker, my next holster, but El Paso has a good reputation.

With saddlery you get what you pay for. in this case it is a perfect fit, extra strong stitching, and quality leather. Rob hires veterans and that’s another reason I support the company.
