Hello all. I'm brand new to the forum, but, not to firearms. I joined based on the recommendation of a friend who is also a member here. He suggested I come and check things out since I am currently interested in an aftermarket picatinny rail for a new to me Scout Rifle in .308.

The rifle is missing it's rail and I would like to source a replacement. Thus far all I've found is the one from XS Sights, but, it has an integral aperture rear sight which I do not need/want. That, and it is pretty dear in terms of coin.

In doing a quick search on the forum, I did not find any information that would help me in my search, so if anybody has any information regarding aftermarket rails that would be great. I guess my big question is this...can I use any aftermarket rail, or do I need something proprietary?

Thanks in advance.

Call Ruger?

Do you want to run forward mounted red dot or long eye relief optics on the original rail? If so just call Ruger and arrange a new original rail.. Most of my scout rifles run Xs rails it lets you put any optic type any where any way along that rail from long eye relief or scope in standard position. Don't underestimate the value in having that ghost ring sight there on the xs rail at all times as a back up if something should happen to your scope or red dot.. red dot batteries go flat and scopes do break.. Couple of twists with a leather man tool to remove the optic and your back hunting or punching holes in paper. Just my thoughts....good luck

Thanks for heads up regarding contacting Ruger. Ha ha ha...it seems that sometimes we overlook the obvious and need somebody to tap us on the shoulder and point it out. I have contacted Ruger and am waiting to hear back from them.

In the meantime, just in regard to the rail and the XS rail in particular, I would like to run a long eye relief scope (I originally thought a red dot of some kind, but I've reached the point where my eyes do require magnification), and I would like to leave the existing irons on (including the factory rear aperture) and so the aperture on the XS rail seems redundant; at least at first blush anyway. I also noticed that in the US, the XS rail is about $95 whereas it is approaching $200 up here in The Great White North.

The Xs rail fitment requires removal of the factory iron sight. They are much longer than the original rail hence the price. It basically covers from the far end of the factory rail across the breech to covering the rear scope mounting point.. If your just going to use a long relief scope just order the original factory rail and leave the original factory iron sight in place. Good luck..

Many thanks for the welcomes, folks!

I did not realize that the XS rail was of that length. Since I want to just keep the iron sights the rifle came with, getting a replacement from Ruger seems to be the right option for me. I've contacted a Canadian distributor and given them the rifle's serial number as they requested, and am now waiting to hear if they can get it and for how many shekels.

Ahhhhhha, a southpaw! I have a left-handed one just like yours but in .223/5.56. Mine is missing the rail also but that's because I removed it on purpose. I have my scope mounted over the receiver using the factory rings so the forward rail was unneeded weight.
