I recently purchased a Ruger model 8366, which is the American rimfire target model with stainless barrel and black laminated thumbhole stock. My question is with the adjustment for the trigger pull weight. I understand how the set screw adjusts the pull weight but is has had no effect when trying to lower it. I have even removed the spring completely and still have a 3-1/2 pound weight per my trigger scale. Curious, has anyone else had this situation with this trigger assembly in either rimfire or center fire as I understand they both work on the same principal. Is there a further modification that can be done to lower the trigger pull? I'd like to get it down to 1-1/2 to 2 pound range as this is used for bench rest target shooting.

The set screw does modify the trigger pull but your 3-1/2 pound pull is really about the minimum backing it all the way out will produce.

You can reduce the pull significanty by trimming the internal trigger spring a coil or two and there are several Youtube videos showing how it is done. Search for "Ruger American trigger job".

I've trimmed the springs on both a centerfire and rimfire American and the trigger pulls improved to 2 pounds and were bump safe. I also bought a couple of extra springs from Ruger to be sure I could return the rifles to OEM specs if I ever sold them.

Mcarbo offers lighter springs so you can avoid modifying the OEM spring if you wish.

For those who may come up against the same conundrum, I fixed my own problem. As I stated with the internal trigger spring completely removed from the trigger assembly, I still had a 3-1/2 pound pull. Meaning there was some kind of drag somewhere other than the trigger catching the edge of the sear. Carefully studying the action as I slowly pulled the trigger and noticed that the top of the trigger was as rubbing the underside of the sear body along with the trigger's ledge and sear ledge engagement. Stoned the top of the trigger (not the trigger/sear engagement). Re-assemble and the pull weight dropped to one pound. Installed a lighter spring and brought it up to a crisp two pound trigger pull weight. OEM spring is in safe keeping along with the rest of my spare firearm parts. Attached photo shows the edge I stoned plus the lighter spring next to the OEM spring.
