Why I won't shop Scheels

Over in the Reloading forum, ngashooter said "I wish I had a Scheels locally". Well he can have the one built here (N.Colorado) about 8 years ago. I went there ONCE, about 6 months after they opened. I'll never set foot in there again. Here's 3 reasons why.

1) The prices on everything there are 20-50% higher than anyplace else around here. Sure, they will price match IF you show them an ad from another local place. But if I have to go to the trouble of finding the best price in town, THAT's where I'm going to buy from. If Scheels wants my business, they need to have the best price to start with.

2) Except for handguns, the gun section is set out in the open with no clerk to supervise the area. I saw a bubba drop a $1200 shotgun on the hardwood floor and just put it back on the rack. I think that if you damage a gun, you just bought it. Not the case there.

3) I really don't care how many bucks/bulls or does/cows you want to stuff and put out on display. But killing fawns/calves so you can display "family groups" grosses me out. The Scheels display was aweful. Bighorn sheep, Mountain goats, raccoons, ducks, and you name it - ALL animals included babies stuffed for their disgusting display.

Nope. I'll never set foot in there again.

It's your money and you decide who gets some of it. I may disagree and also wish there was a Scheels around, the prices I've seen seem fairly competitive. Your points are valid, to you and that's all that counts. I may give some counter points later.

When I lived in Iowa we had a Scheels and I loved it. I wish there was one near me here in south Florida.
They always had a good selection of firearms and plenty of staff to help customers. I do a small amount of reloading and only wanted a couple hundred small pistol primers. They only had boxes of 1,000 so the sales person opened a box and sold me 2 boxes of 100 each primers.

For now I'd prefer to shop Scheels vs Bass Pro. Not sure how long Scheels will make a go of it though. When Sportsmans Whse opened I was amazed at their selection of all things hunting, fishing, shooting and thought it was too good to be true. Fast forward 5 years and they were gone! Don't understand why, the store was always busy and had great merchandise. I did score a nice 7.25" Buckmark Contour Lite on one of the final days of closeout.

Truth is, Scheels is a shoe store with prices on most goods at higher-than-msrp pricing. That indicates they cater to impulse buyers and fools.

Frankly, I see the same thing at BassPros which is why I don't spend any money there either. Big box stores insult me with marketing and "policies", while openly ignoring customers' expectations.

I commend their business model retaining firearms and ammo sales, but I suspect they'd rather sell Korean shoes and Chinese toilet plungers and imported goods made with forced child labor and I feel I need a shower after just passing by.

I have visited the Scheel's in Reno after visiting the BassPro, in Reno. I was in search of reloading supplies and Scheel's had a better selection and comparable price to BassPro. I thought the prices for clothing was a little high, but, it was brand name -- Levi, Columbia...

Quite the rant! Please share some names of places that are deserving and 20% to 50% cheaper. I’m always looking for deals!

I prefer small local shops as much as everyone else but they will stick it to you with a smile as quick as anyone out there if you don’t keep an eye on them. No one shop is the magical answer to all your needs. Shopping around is always smart unless you have a checkbook immune to those fluctuations in price.

As far as firearms on display…ask for a model from the store room that doesn’t have any bumps and bruises on it. You better check them over as well which I’m sure you are fully aware of even if freshly ordered from your local shop.

Again, I don't have a Scheels locally and never been in one. I web browse as an activity and I find stuff like this.
On sale for $230, slightly higher regular price at $330 than Tractor Supply for $300. Which is 10% higher but the sale price beats other pricing.

$304 at Home Depot
Just a pop up example of things that I see and have seen.

We have a Sportsmans Warehouse about 3/4 mile west of Scheels whose prices are mostly 15-20% cheaper. Another 3 miles west is an Ace Hardware whose prices are mostly 30-40% cheaper. When Ace has a sale, it can easily be 50% cheaper.

There are other smaller gun stores in the same general area. Depending on what you're looking for, prices may be about the same, but they are mostly cheaper.

Since BPS bought out Cabelas, I find myself going to Scheels more often. I have a credit card thru them, and the nice thing is they send me a $25 Scheels gift card every few months.
I like that better than having to figure out how to redeem points! I like Scheels golf Dept. They have a nice workshop where they put new grips on some clubs for me.
I give gift cards to my kids on birthdays etc.
Customer service is top notch there.
